NSF workshop report on National Networks of Research Institutes
|
|
In May, several members of the UIDP community took part in a National Science Foundation-hosted two-day workshop on a new vision for research collaboration, the National Networks of Research Institutes (NNRI). The report from that workshop is highly relevant to the interests of UIDP members, so we are sharing a link to it here.
There is significant congressional and administration support for creating topically focused, long-time-frame research institutes that incorporate translational strategies and leverage a public-private collaboration model. As defined by NSF, these institutes will “engage in fundamental research in critical areas of science and engineering and the translation of this research, with partners from industry, philanthropy, government, and non-profit organizations, to solve challenges of national importance.”
We anticipate that UIDP member organizations will be keenly interested as this concept develops. UIDP will continue to follow the progress of this initiative as it has tremendous potential value to our community.

In the language of Morse code, the letter “S” is three short sounds and the letter “O” is three longer sounds. Put them together in the right order and you have a cry for help: S.O.S. Now an NIH-funded team of researchers has cracked a comparable code that specialized immune cells called macrophages use to signal and respond to a threat. directorsblog.nih.gov
Long seen as a supporting role, research administration has increasingly come to be recognized in academia as a profession in its own right. At least three institutions in the United States offer master’s degrees in the field, and numerous professional societies worldwide help administrators with career development and networking. The Research Administrators Certification Council, a non-profit organization in Westminster, Colorado, offers education and testing for a professional certificate that is required for many US government jobs in the field, and the Awards for Training and Higher Education organization performs a similar service in the United Kingdom. The United States has a National Research Administrator Day (25 September) to recognize those in the field. nature.com
More than half of Dutch scientists regularly engage in questionable research practices, such as hiding flaws in their research design or selectively citing literature, according to a new study. And one in 12 admitted to committing a more serious form of research misconduct within the past 3 years: the fabrication or falsification of research results. sciencemag.org
The field of particle physics has a new and improbable star: the muon, which is sometimes referred to as a fat electron. For the second time, this unassuming resident of the subatomic world has appeared to flout the known laws of nature. To some experts, that suggests it might reveal entirely unknown rules. discovermagazine.com
The idea of hidden worlds ruled by odd laws of physics sounds like something out of science fiction. Recently, however, scientists observed a hidden, flattened world within a real material built to perfectly conduct electricity. In the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, researchers reported that electrons in a three-dimensional material behaved as if only two dimensions of space exist. scientificamerican.com
