Fulbright Scholars Information Session | |
The Office of Research Development will host an information session on the Fulbright Scholar Program from 3:30-5 p.m. on November 14 via Zoom. The Fulbright Scholar Program offers nearly 400 teaching, research or combination teaching/research awards for faculty in more than 135 countries.
The session will open with a brief overview of this program's submission requirements and an introduction to the Fulbright Scholars website. This presentation will be followed by presentations by two recent K-State Fulbright Scholar awardees. They will talk about their experience, the logistics of setting up an extended stay in another country and provide tips for the Fulbright Scholars submission.
Attendees will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions. If you are interested in the Fulbright Scholarship program, this is a session you should attend. Please register to attend by noon on November 13.

If you are involved or interested in working with the pet food industry, you are encouraged to attend KibbleCon Lite 2023. The in-person half-day event will be on Thursday, Nov. 2 at the K-State Alumni Center.
KibbleCon Lite is an excellent opportunity for K-State faculty, staff, and students to network with colleagues and industry experts. This year’s bite-sized version of KibbleCon features an engaging keynote session, updates on K-State's research, insights from industry experts, presentations by graduate students, and plenty of chances to network. To register at no cost, K-State faculty and staff should use the code, FACULTYKC23. K-State students should use the code, STUDENTKC23. Online registration closes on Oct. 31. Attendance is limited, so don't delay.
Are you a student with research relevant to pet food? Submit your poster abstract to Stephanie Pierce, smpierce@k-state.edu, by Oct. 13 to be entered into a poster presentation competition. The top submissions will be asked to present their research at KibbleCon for a chance to win scholarships — first place will receive $800, second place will receive $500, and third place will receive $200.
KibbleCon was created by the K-State Pet Food Program and K-State Innovation Partners and is a place to have honest conversations on the future of the industry with pet food visionaries and industry influencers. Since 2017, K-State has hosted an annual Pet Food R&D Showcase featuring networking, cutting-edge research and interactive experiences with top pet food suppliers. As the experience progressed, the event was rebranded to KibbleCon.

Build and Broaden Workshop | |

The Build and Broaden Program in the Directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences will host its second annual program symposium.
Build and Broaden aims to broaden participation in the social, behavioral and economic sciences through support for research, training and research infrastructure at minority-serving institutions, including partnerships with and among those institutions.
The event will provide information about the program funding, best practices, submission preparation, post submissions and budgets. In addition, a diverse group of PIs will discuss how NSF funding supports the implementation of their projects. Finally, there will be a conversation about additional funding opportunities throughout the foundation.

KU Faculty Workshop — Army Research | |

The University of Kansas would like to invite K-State faculty to a research workshop.
Purpose: Build research relationships with the Army Research Institute, or ARI.
Attendees: In addition to the Basic Research Branch of ARI, the workshop will include program managers and faculty from ARI Fort Leavenworth, Army University, or IRAD, Center for Army Leadership, the Army War College, and the Consortium Fellows Research Program. Our objective is to have 30 KU faculty/researchers from across the myriad disciplines identified in the ARI BAA.
Format: The workshop will begin with a plenary session for 90 minutes. During this time, program managers will present their programs, research priorities, and recommendations for doing business with their institution. Following the plenary session, we will have breakout rooms available for faculty to speak about their research. For basic research, we anticipate research interests in the below categories. Our goal is to host this event in a face-to-face environment.

NCR-SARE Regional Review Committee | |
The North Central Region - Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program, or NCR-SARE, is seeking members* for the following grant review committees:
- Research and Education Grant Program Review Committee (Technical Committee)
- Farmer Rancher Grant Program Review Committee
- Partnership Grant Program Review Committee
- Professional Development Grant Program (PDP) Review Committee
- Graduate Student Grant Program Review Committee
- Youth Educator Grant Program Review Committee
*Review committee members must live and work in one of the 12 states that comprise the North Central SARE region. Those states are IL, IN, IA, KS, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, OH, SD, and WI.
NCR-SARE’s review committees review proposals and make recommendations to the Administrative Council, which can be a rewarding and educating experience for those interested in sustainable production and the grant-making process.
Each NCR-SARE review committee has varying requirements, but review committee members are generally required to review proposals, discuss the proposals on a conference call or in person, and provide recommendations to the Administrative Council. An NCR-SARE review committee member may not apply to that particular grant program while serving on that committee.
Complete this online form to apply for one of NCR-SARE’s grant review committees. In addition to completing the online form, we request that you provide a 1-2 page resume or curriculum vitae (CV) if you have one and email it to ncrsare@umn.edu. Recommendations can also be sent to that email address. We will acknowledge receipt of the materials and reply regarding the selection process's outcome.
NCR-SARE is one of four regional offices that run the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program, a nationwide grants and education program to advance sustainable innovation to American agriculture. Since 1988, NCR-SARE has awarded more than $100 million worth of competitive grants to farmers and ranchers, researchers, educators, public and private institutions, nonprofit groups, and others exploring sustainable agriculture in 12 states. The SARE program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture — National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

New research explains "Atlantification" of the Arctic Ocean
New research by an international team of scientists describes the causes for the stalled trend in Arctic Ocean sea-ice loss since 2007. The findings indicate that stronger declines in sea ice will occur when an atmospheric feature known as the Arctic dipole reverses itself in its recurring cycle. NSF
Verbal nonsense reveals limitations of AI chatbots
Artificial intelligence chatbots use large language models to generate responses that seemingly mimic the way humans use and understand language, but a new study shows that these models remain vulnerable to mistaking nonsense for natural language.
