Annual Research and Scholarly Activity Report
|
|
The Annual Research and Scholarly Activity Report for fiscal year 2020 is now available on the Office of the Vice President for Research website. The FY 20 report summarizes yet another record year of accomplishment for K-State faculty and staff in the pursuit and receipt of extramural support for the many innovative programs that contribute to the local, regional and global knowledge and innovation ecosystem. Total extramural support increased by more than 15% or more than $26.6 million over FY 19. This reflects a remarkable year of achievement for K-State, especially in light of nationwide funding and work environment instabilities.
The Office of the Vice President for Research is very excited to unveil a reimagined and innovative approach to reporting RSCAD data that gives you the opportunity to export and interact with the data to facilitate custom filtering and further analysis, thus empowering you with additional flexibility to use the data for your specific reporting and data analysis objectives. We thank all of the individuals across the university that contributed to this new reporting approach.
We invite you to review the report and interact with the data to enable it to tell the story of your individual or unit’s accomplishments. The online interactive tool may be accessed at k-state.edu/research/our-research/reports.
The OVPR extends our congratulations to everyone that contributed to this record-setting year.

SciENcv for NSF current and pending support and biographical sketch generation
|
|
As of October 5, 2020, the National Science Foundation is requiring use of either SciENcv or their fillable PDF form for biosketches and current and pending support documents.
K-State strongly encourages the use of SciENcv and will use it for NSF current and pending support documents. Use of this system reduces administrative burden for research faculty by creating one report for a researcher to use repeatedly for any NSF submission.

Memorandum for Department of Energy Office of Science applicants and awardees
|
|
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has changed the research enterprise supported by the Office of Science. Between cancelled conferences and workshops, months of telework, placing facilities into safe statuses and curtailed research operations, challenges in institutional recruitment and hiring, and transitioning to remote learning, we’ve all accommodated a number of changes to how we do and support science.
Despite the challenges caused by current circumstances, the scientific community endures. Conferences and workshops moved online, instruction of students continues, researchers remain productive by analyzing data, writing papers and submitting proposals, peer reviews continue, and awards have continued to be issued.

Bayer scientists to discuss funding opportunities
|
|
8 a.m., noon and 8 p.m
October 14
Faculty are invited to a live, interactive webinar hosted by Bayer Crop Science, one of the world’s leading innovators in crop science and pest control. Bayer scientists will be discussing their latest funding opportunities on Halo as part of its Grant4 program. These grants are well-suited for principal investigators as well as postdocs and grad students, and are one of the primary ways Bayer identifies research partners for larger-scale, long-term collaborations.
The webinar is hosted by Phil Taylor, PhD, Bayer's Open Innovation Lead, and Al Kriz, PhD, Bayer's Innovation Scout. Following a brief presentation, they will be available to answer questions. Scientists can register for one of three available sessions and view the RFPs in advance below.

Early Career Funding Opportunities Information Session
|
|
3:30-5 p.m.
November 12
Via Zoom
Which early career funding opportunity is right for you? Come to this session and find out. The NSF CAREER program is one option, but sometimes it seems like it is the only option. Other prestigious young faculty awards are offered by the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy that are focused solely on research rather than the teacher-scholar role required by NSF.
An overview of young faculty career programs will be presented at this session followed by a panel of faculty members who have received young faculty awards from NSF and DoD. The panelists will provide insight on their awards, addressing why they applied to the program and what the award has meant to their career. Take advantage of this opportunity to ask questions and talk with the awardees.
Zoom links will be sent out after registration and a few days prior to event.

A Phase 1 trial of an investigational mRNA vaccine to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection has shown that the vaccine is well-tolerated and generates a strong immune response in older adults. A report published today in the New England Journal of Medicine describes the findings from the study, which was supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health. nih.gov
A key metric in seeking to end the COVID-19 pandemic is the likely duration of acquired immunity, which is how long people infected with SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19, are protected against reinfection. The hope is that acquired immunity from natural infection—or from vaccines—will be long-lasting, but data to confirm that’s indeed the case won’t be in for many months or years. nih.gov
In an article published in Nature Genetics, researchers confirm that about 14% of all cases of cerebral palsy, a disabling brain disorder for which there are no cures, may be linked to a patient’s genes and suggest that many of those genes control how brain circuits become wired during early development. nih.gov
When we think about sponges, we tend to think of something soft and squishy. But researchers at Harvard University are using the glassy skeletons of marine sponges as inspiration for the next generation of stronger and taller buildings, longer bridges and lighter spacecraft. nih.gov
For the 1 to 3 million Americans with type 1 diabetes, the immune system destroys insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas that control the amount of glucose in the bloodstream. As a result, these individuals must monitor their blood glucose often and take replacement doses of insulin to keep it under control. Such constant attention, combined with a strict diet to control sugar intake, is challenging—especially for children. directorsblog.nih.gov
