NSF Updates to the Research Performance Progress Report
|
|
Effective October 5, 2020, the National Science Foundation (NSF) will enhance the Project Reporting System in Research.gov to implement the revised Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR). The RPPR is a uniform format for reporting performance progress on Federally funded research projects and research-related activities. NSF awardees use the RPPR to prepare and submit annual and final project reports to NSF. Further details about the RPPR can be found on the Research.gov About Project Reports website.
New Question for Project Reports with Active Other Support Changes
-
On October 5, 2020, NSF will add the following new question to the Edit Participants screen: Has there been a change in the active other support of the PI/PD(s) since the last reporting period? If Principal Investigators (PIs)/Project Directors (PDs) and co-PIs/co-PDs select “Yes,” they will be required to upload their most up-to-date Current and Pending Support document in an NSF-approved format to notify NSF that active other support has changed since the award was made or since the most recent annual report.
Additional New Questions from the Revised RPPR
Beginning October 5, 2020, NSF will also add the following three questions to the "Impact" and "Changes/Problems" tabs:
-
What was the impact on teaching and educational experiences? (Impact tab);
-
What percentage of the award’s budget was spent in a foreign country? (Impact tab); and
-
Has there been a change in primary performance site location from that originally proposed? (Changes/Problems tab).
NSF-specific Updates
- NSF-specific help text updates have been added throughout, and NSF-specific instructions have been clarified or enhanced.
- To reduce administrative burden, NSF has consolidated data entry fields where possible.

Research.gov Implementation Update
|
|
In the coming weeks and months, NSF will begin making changes to specific funding opportunities to require the use of Research.gov for the preparation and submission of proposals to NSF.1 The Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) will soon require the use of Research.gov for the preparation and submission of proposals in response to its core programs that do not have deadline dates. NSF funding opportunities will clearly specify whether submission via Research.gov is available or required.

Inspire middle and high school students to interact with STEM
|
|
K-State faculty, staff and students are invited to join KAWSE for the middle school outreach programming, the Girls Researching Our World (GROW). This year, we are offering our popular camps virtually, offering multiple ways for you to participate:
- Design and facilitate a hands-on activity for students that demonstrates your research, covers fundamental concepts, or showcases interesting phenomena in your disciplines (pre-recorded).
- Provide a virtual tour of your lab or research facility (pre-recorded).
- Interact and inspire middle school students in our virtual “Meet the facilitator."
We hope to include a large variety of STEM topics in our activities, and all interested parties are encouraged to sign up. This includes K-State faculty, staff and students. Activity proposal forms are now available and are due by Friday, Oct. 2. Your recorded session must be returned to KAWSE by Wednesday, Oct. 14.

New findings by scientists at the National Institutes of Health and their collaborators help explain why some people with COVID-19 develop severe disease. The findings also may provide the first molecular explanation for why more men than women die from COVID-19. nih.gov
A fourth Phase 3 clinical trial evaluating an investigational vaccine for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has begun enrolling adult volunteers. The trial is designed to evaluate if the investigational Janssen COVID-19 vaccine (JNJ-78436725) can prevent symptomatic COVID-19 after a single dose regimen. Up to 60,000 volunteers will be enrolled in the trial at up to nearly 215 clinical research sites in the United States and internationally. nih.gov
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought new challenges across the United States. Access to healthy, nutritious food options are important to health and well-being. With more children not attending childcare, school, and college in-person (a source of nutritious meals for many students) and with changes in employment status during the COVID-19 pandemic, many households may struggle with food security. content.govdelivery.com/
For the 1 to 3 million Americans with type 1 diabetes, the immune system destroys insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas that control the amount of glucose in the bloodstream. As a result, these individuals must monitor their blood glucose often and take replacement doses of insulin to keep it under control. Such constant attention, combined with a strict diet to control sugar intake, is challenging—especially for children. directorsblog.nih.gov
Engineers have designed a Velcro-like food sensor, made from an array of silk microneedles, that pierces packaging to sample food for signs of spoilage and bacterial contamination. nsf.gov
