AUGUST 2020
Research and Sponsored Programs Update
WE’RE HERE FOR YOU
Listening to President Castro at last week’s Fall Assembly, we were reminded how this unusual time could result in more timely, efficient opportunities to connect. Toward that end, we’re proud to announce that our Fall grant proposal workshop series has moved online with videos on subjects such as budget development, compliance and the grant process.

We’re also continuing our popular grant proposal certificate program, which recognizes faculty/staff who view a number of our videos, meet with their grant manager and submit a proposal during the academic year.

As always, our grant managers are available to meet individually via Zoom to discuss your research interests and assist with your proposal. In addition, please don’t hesitate to invite your grant manager to your next virtual department meeting, where we can provide a brief overview of our services and answer any questions.

Lastly, kudos to the University’s Research Restart Task Force, which issued a Phased Ramp-up Plan for Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities that covers both on- and off-campus sites. We thank everyone for their cooperation with the new guidelines and commitment to safety during this time and look forward to another bold and successful academic year.

COMPLIANCE CORNER
Fresno State is committed to complying with the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training required by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF), as well as the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).

To fulfill these requirements, the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program is utilized to ensure all persons receive proper training in RCR.
Although the NSF and the USDA NIFA only require online training in RCR, the NIH also mandates at least eight hours of face-to-face instruction. However, due to COVID-19, the NIH is waiving the in-person requirement and allowing online training to be a sufficient form of instruction.

Fresno State’s Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects (CPHS) has issued guidance regarding ethical practices for the continuation of research involving human subjects during campus and community efforts to limit exposure to the coronavirus.
FACULTY INTERVIEWS
Recent RSP newsletters have featured interviews with professors Morgan Hawker (chemistry) and Jennifer Randles (sociology), who also serves as the chair of the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects (CPHS) and the University Undergraduate Program Review Committee. Among the highlights: Hawker spoke about her first year at Fresno State, while Randles reviewed the role of the CPHS on campus.
