Research and Sponsored Programs Update
GRANT PROPOSAL CERTIFICATE AWARDEES
While we were forced to cancel spring events such as the Central California Research Symposium and our PI appreciation luncheon due to COVID-19, nothing could stop our Grant Proposal Certificate Program . Over 30 faculty/staff have completed the program since its inception three years ago, including nine new recipients.

Each of the awardees participated in a number of workshops during the year and worked closely with their research administrator to submit an external grant proposal. Tenured and tenure track faculty, staff who serve as co-PIs, and other staff members who are active in grant development are all eligible for the program. 


Be sure to check back next month for an interview with one of our awardees, Morgan Hawker , who received a CSUPERB New Investigator Grant for her project titled, “ Optimizing plasma conditions to customize silk film chemistry while retaining morphology .” Until then, we wish you good health and safety.
MAY 2020 MONTHLY AWARD REPORT

Nichole Walsh and Patty M. Lopez ( California Reading and Literature Project ) received continued state and federal funding for 2019-20 to deliver standards-based teacher professional development in reading and academic language instruction. In addition, CRLP received a $54,147 contract from the Parlier Unified School District to provide Foundational Skills training.

Henry Madden Library received the Lift Every Voice: Why African American Poetry Matters grant to support library programming. The grant is funded with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Emerson Collective.

The Central California Center for Health and Human Services received an $80,000 grant from the Blue Shield of California Foundation to improve communications that address the COVID-19 public health crisis in support of healthy families and communities in California.

Wannasarn (Saam) Noonsuk (Art History) received a $4,929 grant from The Japan Foundation for his project titled, "Japanese Art and Ceramic Traditions in Aichi Prefecture."

Mario Banuelos ( Mathematics ) received a two-year, $33,303 grant from NIH (via UC Merced ) for his project titled, "Regulatory T cell function in predicting Valley fever outcomes."

Margaret Ellis ( Plant Science ) received second-year funding from USDA for her project titled, "Identification of Fusarium Wilt Populations in Cotton Fields and Pathogen Infection for Maintaining Sustainable Production in the USA."

NSF Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) ( Aug. 14)





COMPLIANCE CORNER
Fresno State ensures that activities and practices on campus do not create potential for conflict of interest or nepotism. The University has a detailed Policy on Nepotism that outlines the definition and campus procedure for situations where a conflict of interest may arise. The Academic Policy Manual contains a sample Nepotism Disclosure Memorandum for use in cases involving potential nepotism/conflict of interest. 


Also: Fresno State’s Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects (CPHS) has issued guidance regarding ethical practices for the continuation of research involving human subjects during campus and community efforts to limit exposure to the coronavirus.

CSM VIRTUAL RESEARCH SHOWCASE
Posters/abstracts are online from the first Virtual Research Showcase , which was hosted by College of Science and Mathematics earlier this month and drew more than 1,000 visitors. Congratulations to all the participants, including first-place winners Blanca Nino (graduate poster), Yessica Casas (undergraduate poster), Sarah Kroeker (graduate oral presentation) and Alexandra Hough (undergraduate oral presentation).

AROUND CAMPUS
President Castro announced the six winners of this year’s Bold Ideas Challenge , including Monique Bell ( Marketing and Logistics ) and her program titled, “Multidisciplinary Perspectives of Women in Education and Research (mPOWER)”

Undergraduate students Lancelot Leong, Alexander Davis and Michael Bendot presented at the Lyles College of Engineering’s Virtual Projects Day . Their project (“Human Detection and Localization in Heavy Smoke”) is led by 2020 Claude C. Laval Award for Innovative Technology and Research recipient Hovannes Kulhandjian ( Electrical and Computer Engineering ).

The Fresno State Digital Repository will soon be migrating to the CSU-wide Scholarworks platform. It will continue to provide an Open Access venue for faculty to disseminate scholarly, creative, or instructional materials related to their work at Fresno State.

Henry Madden Library has created an online exhibit to honor this year’s Outstanding Faculty Publications and the bold contributions to research, scholarship, and creative work made by Fresno State faculty.
FACULTY HIGHLIGHTS
Dermot Donnelly-Hermosillo ( Chemistry ) and his NSF-funded project (EQUIPS – Enhancing the Quality of Undergraduate Investigations in Physical Science) was featured in the 2020 STEM for All Video Showcase.

Congratulations to the inaugural College of Social Sciences Award winners, including Hongwei Dong ( Geography and City & Regional Planning ), who received the Research Award for his prolific publication record . Other award winners: Elvia Rodriguez (Lecturer); Melanie Ram and Maritere López (Service); and Luis Fernando Macías (Teaching).

Amber Esquivel (Native American Initiative), Jill Fields (History), Rosemary Wanis (CSDS), and Negin Tahvildary (Philosophy) each shared their wisdom as women in higher education during a virtual panel discussion on May 7.

Matthew Sharps ( Psychology ) wrote an article for the May issue of Psychology Today on the importance of eyewitness testimony in the courtroom.
