GREETINGS FROM RESEARCH AND SPONSORED PROGRAMS

The new academic year brings new beginnings and a new way to connect with faculty and staff for us in Research and Sponsored Programs (RSP). We’re excited to debut our monthly newsletter with a special focus on you – the people driving Fresno State’s bold new growth in grants and contracts activity. Our congratulations to the Fresno Staff faculty and staff who received 393 awards and
$45 million
to support their research last year – a record-setting amount and a
20% increase
over the $37 million received in 2017- 18. We are proud to support their work:
- The number of proposals increased by 12 percent (480 to 538)
- The number of awards increased by 16 percent
(340 to 393)
The new semester also means changes in our office, where
Doug Carey
has been appointed RSP Director following the retirement of Ellen Shimakawa. A Fresno State graduate and Certified Research Administrator, Doug began his tenure with RSP as an administrative analyst in 1999 and served as a grants administrator for the past 12 years.

Rajee Amarasinghe
(Mathematics) received a
$1.4-million award
from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to provide scholarships to help majors in the integrated credential option pay tuition and other costs so they can concentrate on earning their degree.

Grant Proposal Workshops
: Register now for our fall series of grant workshops, which run from Aug. 29-Oct. 7 and begin with our most popular offering, Getting Started with Grants or Contracts on Thursday, Aug. 29, from 10-11 a.m.
Other workshops cover topics on everything from budget development to compliance to research data sharing. All sessions are held in Thomas Administration, Room 117.
Grant Proposal Certificate Program
: All tenured and tenure-track faculty are invited to participate in the Grant Proposal Certificate Program. Now in its third year, the program is designed to encourage grant activity and includes attendance at various proposal workshops and individual meetings with RSP grant managers. Certificate recipients receive a Kennel Bookstore gift card during the year-end award ceremony.

UPCOMING FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
|
USDA/NIFA Specialty Crop Research Initiative
(SCRI) – Deadline: Oct. 15, 2019 - Addresses key challenges of national, regional, and multi-state importance in sustaining all components of food and agriculture, including conventional and organic food production systems.
The
NIH Common Fund initiative
, the High-Risk, High-Reward Research program, aims to accelerate biomedical, behavioral and social science discoveries by supporting exceptionally creative scientists proposing highly innovative, impactful research. Four annual funding opportunities are available, broadly divided by career stage (deadlines vary)

Congratulations to last year’s recipient of the Claude C. Laval Jr. Award for Innovative Technology and Research,
Yuanyuan Xie
(Mechanical Engineering), for his project titled, “A Study of Internal Thermal Degradation of Li-ion Battery on Electric Vehicles.” Applications are now being accepted from full-time faculty and students from all academic disciplines for this year’s award. Deadline: Friday, Nov. 15.

COMPLIANCE CORNER: CITI Program
|
Responsible Conduct of Research
(RCR) training is part of funding requirements of both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
In addition to RCR training, other available courses include Human Subjects Research (HSR), Animal Care and Use (ACU), Conflict of Interest (COI), Information Privacy and Security (IPS) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

Central California Research Symposium:
The 40th Central California Research Symposium was a huge success at our new venue at the Madden Library, where nearly 300 students presented their research, scholarship, and creative activities on May 1st;

Plans are already underway for next year’s event, to be held Weds., April 15, 2020. All fields of research are considered for presentation to exchange further ideas among investigators and the general public. Be on the lookout for the Call for Abstracts in November.
Fresno State students made an impressive showing at the 33
rd
annual CSU Student Research Competition at Cal State Fullerton in April. (

Two Fresno State students win national research award
from pool of 5,000. Biochemistry majors Micah Olivas and Alyssa Rivera were among 496 undergraduate students nationwide awarded the 2019 Goldwater Scholarship for showing exceptional promise of becoming the next generation of natural sciences, mathematics and engineering research leaders.
