RESEARCH IN THE TIME OF COVID |
|
Campus remains awfully quiet during this unprecedented time, but our faculty/staff remain as active as ever. Weeks after closing out another record-setting year in grants and contracts, we’re off to another strong start with many project directors looking to build on their past success. At this month’s campus forum, we were reminded about the value of their efforts by Provost Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval:
“Research is an integral part of who we are at Fresno State,” he stated. “Research is not just theoretical because it always returns to the classroom in an informed way in restrengthening a lesson or involving students.”
We were also pleased to hear about Provost Jiménez-Sandoval’s ongoing support for Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity (RSCA) funding. OCTOBER 2020 MONTHLY AWARD REPORT |

- Alexandria Hansen (Biology) received a $21,500 award for a National Science Foundation conference grant titled, “Biology Beyond the Classroom.”

Patricia D. Lopez (Curriculum and Instruction) received funding in the amount of $749,995 from the U.S. Department of Education for the Enseñamos en el Valle Central project, which is beginning its third year.
- Aly Tawfik (Civil and Geomatics Engineering) and Samer Sarofim (Marketing and Logistics) received a $74,928 subcontract from San Jose State University for their project, “Developing a Feasible Business Model for Expanding the EV Market to Lower Income Californians.”
- Gurreet Brar (Plant Science) received second-year funding from the California Pistachio Research Board for his project, “Cracking the Black-box of dormancy in Pistachios: Tracking biochemical changes in inflorescence buds from dormancy to bud break.”
- Bill Bommer (Management) and Emil Milevoj (Lyles Center) received a $264,967 award from the Office of Trafic Safety to continue collecting, analyzing, and providing data on seat belt usage in the State of California.

John Capitman and Tania Pacheco-Werner (Central Valley Health Policy Institute) received a $42,877 grant from the City of Fresno (via Fresno Building Healthy Communities) to provide services for COVID-19 prevention education.

Carey Higgins Dobney (Media, Communications and Journalism) had her paper, “The Digital Journalist’s Labor Conditions in U.S. Local Television Newsrooms,” accepted for the Broadcast Education Association’s virtual conference.

CLAUDE C. LAVAL JR. AWARD FOR INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH |

In 1984, Fresno State established an award in honor of Mr. Claude C. Laval Jr., a long-time resident of Fresno and a productive inventor. This award has supported the development of innovative technology and related research at the university. Applications are now being accepted from full-time faculty and students from all academic disciplines for this year’s award. Deadline: Monday, Nov. 1.

Register online and join chair Jennifer Randles as the Fresno State Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects concludes its fall workshop series with a virtual workshop on Thurs., Nov. 19 from 3-4:30 p.m., on departmental level and University CPHS review procedures.

Fresno State’s Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects (CPHS) has issued guidance regarding ethical practices for the continuation of research involving human subjects during campus and community efforts to limit exposure to the coronavirus.

Join Leslie Ponciano, CSU Director of Research Opportunities, for an interactive virtual Grant Proposal Mentoring event on Friday, Nov. 6. The free workshops are appropriate for faculty/staff in all disciplines and all career stages. A grant proposal development workshop will be held in the morning, while participants in the afternoon session will focus on proposal revisions.

The Election is Over, Now What? Sociology faculty will discuss how to keep working towards racial justice and a more equitable society after the 2020 election. (Nov. 12, 2-3 p.m.)
