After an extended absence due to the pandemic, we're excited to celebrate Fresno State faculty and staff who have received external research funding with the return of our Principal Investigator (PI) Appreciation Luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 17, in the Resnick Student Union.


We have plenty to celebrate after recording a remarkable fifth straight record year in grants and contracts in 2022-23 with 434 awards and $70.7 million in awards. Join President Jiménez-Sandoval and Provost Fu as we applaud your efforts; please RSVP by Tues., Sept. 26.

SEPTEMBER 2023 MONTHLY AWARD REPORT

  • Wei Wu (Construction Management) received a three-year, $345,237 grant from the National Science Foundation for Fresno State’s first NSF Mid-Career Advancement Award. Dr. Wu’s project focuses on designing engaging and inclusive STEM learning experiences with extended reality.


  • Jim Boren (MCJ) received a $35,000 grant from the McClatchy Foundation to support operations for the Students of Color Training Program, including student stipends and the Youth Leadership Institute.


  • Alejandro Calderon-Urrea (Biology) received Supplemental Funding for Equipment from NIH for his project, "Nematicidal Chalcones: A Genetic Approach to Uncovering the Action Mechanism."


  • Ginny Barnes (Library) received a $5,000 grant from California Humanities for her project, "Indigenous Wisdom: Celebrating our Central Valley Indigenous Elders."


  • Gurreet Brar (Plant Science) received a three-year grant from the Almond Board of California for his project, "Evaluation of Almond Rootstocks."

FACULTY HIGHLIGHTS


  • Nancy Nisbett (Rec Admin) was inducted into the National Academy of Recreational Therapists and recognized as a Distinguished Fellow in Recreational Therapy.


  • Scott Sailor (Kinesiology) was elected to the board of directors for the National Athletic Trainers Association Research and Education Foundation.



  • Betsy Hays (MCJ) received the Career Champion of the Year Award from the University's Career Development Center.

INTERNAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Claude C. Laval Jr. Award for Innovative Technology and Research:: Applications for this $5,000 award will be evaluated for creativity, innovation, practical application, and general merit. New this year: All currently enrolled full-time Fresno State undergraduate and graduate students from all academic disciplines are eligible to apply. Each student applicant must list a faculty mentor in their application. Award will be made to the student applicant; faculty are not eligible to apply as the primary applicant. Apply via InfoReady by Sept. 29.


Claude C. Laval III Award for Commercialization of Research, Innovation and Creativity: Applications are invited from full-time faculty and students at Fresno State who have an interest

in pursuing the next steps towards technology transfer, commercialization and

entrepreneurship. Proposed budgets cannot exceed $10,000. Apply via InfoReady by Oct. 6.

  • The 45th annual Central California Research Symposium is set for Wednesday, April 3 in the Resnick Student Union. Faculty are asked to encourage their students to apply when the Call for Abstracts is posted online in early October.   • Faculty, mark your calendars and register your classes for the end-of-semester High Impact Practices (HIPs) Student Symposium, to be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8. The event gives students a chance to share their high-impact learning experiences with the community.

  • Nupur Hajela (Physical Therapy) was invited to present at last month’s Transatlantic Telehealth Research Network Conference in Berkeley on “Revolutionizing Healthcare Education: Telehealth Simulations Empower Next-Generation Interprofessional Healthcare Teams.”




  • Felipe Mercado (DSWE) had his debut book, "A Journey to Compassion: Learning to Stand Firm in the Face of Pain," recognized as the "Most Inspirational Non-fiction Book" at the International Latino Book Awards in the English category. 



  • The latest issue of #FresnoWriters is available online. An ongoing series on the Fresno State MFA blog, #FresnoWriters celebrates the professional accomplishments of students, alumni, and faculty in Fresno State’s Department of English and Creative Writing Program.
