Scientists from Mallorca university UIB are joining forces with engineers to determine the best strain of olive. Researches want to create an olive that can withstand harsher weather conditions, failing farming models, and the recent plague known as the ‘olive ebola’, which is spreading throughout Spain.

Olives SA AGM
The 2017 Olives South Australia AGM will be held on Thursday, 30 November at the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds - Secretary’s Office building, at 5.30pm for a 6pm start. Please use the Rose Terrace carpark; tickets will be validated for free parking. A buffet supper and wines will be provided.

Opportunities
Expressions of interest for funding from the Ian Potter Foundation opened on November 3. This round will consider applications for international learning and development, conferences and travel. The emphasis is on projects that address the causes of problems rather than treat the symptoms, and which take a new approach to problem solving. More information here .
Women & Leadership Australia is administering a national initiative offering female ag-leaders grants of between $3K and $8K to enable participation in a range of leadership development programs. Deadline for applications is December 15. More information here .
New Zealand
Kiwis are spending less on luncheon sausage and more on olives and fresh herbs, Stats NZ said today. As a result, the humble sandwich filler is dropping out of the basket used to measure food price inflation.

International
Scientists in Chile have developed a software modeling program to assist olive growers in making key decisions about when to plant and harvest their crops.
As the disease spreads, olive growers in northern Puglia remain confident their trees will fare better than those of the neighbors to the south.

What is most disturbing is the belief of some growers that the disease is a fabricated “money making scheme”.

Consuming a diet rich in antioxidant foods is associated with a reduction in risk of type-2 diabetes (T2D) in middle-aged women, reports a new study in Diabetologia.
The “Friends of Olive Oil” in Greece announced the Olive Challenge, the first “innovation and entrepreneurship competition” for the olive sector last week at a press conference in Athens.
Kevin O'Connor has spent the last few months learning all he can about olive oil as the resident chef for the Australian brand that recently set up shop in the U.S.
The recent unsettled weather in western Greece, along with the floods it brought and the tragic toll on human lives it took in Attica, did not leave the olive crop unaffected. The storm called Eurydice that hammered many parts of the country brought along strong winds, rain and hail.

Exports to Greece, anyone?
Using innovation and technology to transform Tunisia’s olive oil industry was the focus of a high-level conference today in the country’s capital, Tunis. The event, organised by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), drew around 80 industry players from Tunisia, Morocco and Europe to discuss the latest trends and advances in the field.

The focus was on “raising quality standards and developing high-value-added products” – great aims.
