RBI invite RFP for mobile phone-based solution to help visually impaired people easily identify Indian currency notes
The Reserve Bank is looking at a mobile phone-based solution to help visually impaired people easily identify Indian currency notes. Currently, intaglio printing-based identification marks are present in banknotes of Rs 100 and above for helping the visually challenged identify them. At present, banknotes of Rs 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 2000 are in circulation.

There are about 8 million blind or visually impaired people in the country, who are likely to benefit from the identification of Indian banknotes. In line with that, the RBI has now invited Request for Proposal (RFP) for for Development of Mobile Application for Identification of Denomination of Indian Banknotes under project Currency Denomination Identification project (CDI project).

As on March 31, 2018 there are about 102 billion pieces of banknotes in circulation having a value of Rs. 18 trillion. At present banknotes in the denominations of Rs. 10, 20, 50,100,200,500 and 2000 are in circulation besides Re1 notes issued by Government of India.
