"I SEE MYSELF IN YOU"
A COMMUNITY SEDER
OF IMMIGRANTS and REFUGEES
Tuesday, April 11, 5:30 PM
Location: Fellowship Hall below Congregational Church, 2 Main St., Middlebury
"Do not oppress a stranger; you yourselves know how it feels to be stranger,
having been strangers in the Land of Egypt." (Ex 23:3)
Each year at Passover, Jews everywhere gather to remember that we were strangers and refugees in the land of Egypt. As American Jews, we are keenly aware of what it has meant to be refugees and immigrants to this country; we have also experienced the devastating cost of being
targeted for attack, or turned away.
This year, we at Havurah feel that in the face of rising animosity that aims to divide us, it is particularly important to join hands with immigrants and refugees of all faiths and nations of origin, and to come together at this time of year to tell our stories, support one another, and share a meal in solidarity and friendship. Our Haggadah, or text, will combine personal stories from guests who have agreed to share, selected poems, along with traditional songs and customs of the Passover Seder.
If you or your family immigrated to the US, or came here as refugees- in this generation or in generations past- please consider joining us
for our community seder, "I See Myself in You". If there is a song about freedom from your culture of origin, one that can be shared across faiths and cultures, please come ready to share it with us!
Please RSVP so we can gauge our set up needs.
Space may be limited due to space to please RSVP early!
Please bring a dish to share from your Family's Nation of Origin (amended to comply with our Passover Kashrut Policy- See Below)
We will be offering babysitting/children's activities during the event so that our younger participants will have a great experience!
To cover incidentals we ask $7 per person or $28 max per family.

Martin Heidegger and the Far Right in Contemporary Europe
Thursday, 6 April, at 7:00 in Memorial Lounge (Room 338) of the Waterman Building. Sponsored by the Miller Center for Holocaust Studies at the University of Vermont.
"Throughout contemporary Europe, far right parties are threatening to tip the political balance from democracy to new forms of autocracy. Among the intellectuals who have nurtured the ideology underlying the new political authoritarianism, the German philosopher Martin Heidegger's doctrines and ideas have played a central role. These linkages are especially disturbing in light of the recent publication of Heidegger's Black Notebooks, which demonstrate his unstinting support for National Socialism and its agenda of genocidal imperialism."
Richard Wolin is Distinguished Professor of History, Political Science and Comparative Literature at the City University of New York Graduate Center.

welcome!!! Join us to island hop via canoes along Lake Bitawbagok (as the Abenaki call it) translated as the 'Lake Between' known as Lake Champlain to explore who lives there, what grows there, and discover infinite spaces to connect with each other, ourselves, and the Divine.
Through the lens of nature awareness, we will explore ancient and modern Jewish practices as we share the transition from the work week into the Sabbath day of rest. Programming will depend upon participant interest, yet possibilities include: technical paddling skills, creative prayer, low impact camping, eco-kosher fireside cooking, tracking animals, birding, wild foraging, nature awareness challenges, swimming, hiking, star gazing, earthcrafts, and scout skills.

CHOCOLATE AND CHANTING: A Kirtan Kabbalat Shabbat
March 31, 6:30. Havurah of Addison Country, 56 N. Pleasant St. Middlebury, VT.
Communal chanting is an ancient technology for awakening joy and connection with others. Join us for a very special Kabbalat Shabbat led by Rabbi Jan Salzman, Rabbi David Edleson and Dr. Rebecca Gould. This is an opportunity to try out a different sort of spirit-filled Shabbat, when the singing will be "kirtan-style," meaning "call and response" with drums, harmonium, and other instruments to help us let down our hair and lift up our spirits. Our chants will use short meaningful passages from Hebrew prayers that focus on different ways of approaching the divine. Starting slowly, we chant each one again and again as we add drums and build the tempo and energy. Come try it out! Bring some friends who might want to try something new. We can all use more joy in our lives, and we will help that along with oneg treats of luscious chocolatey goodness.
Please bring something (nut-free)chocolate to share, any percussive instruments you might have, and your bodies ready to move. All are welcome! (Email dedleson@gmail.com with questions.)
Song session style shabbat for Friday, April 14.
We will meet at Havurah house and start around 6:15pm and have a small Oneg after (provided, not potluck).
Please consider joining us for this special evening of song. We will do some Havurah standards, familiar melodies from Kabbalat Shabbat as well as popular Jewish camp songs and a few new tunes. It's a great way to remember your Jewish camp days, introduce kids and adults alike to melodies sung across the country and experience something new!
It will be informal, welcoming and most importantly- fun!!! Please plan to join us and bring your friends!!

Services will be at 6 pm as usual. Following services around 7 pm we will have a meal with ample time for socializing so that we can all just get to know each other a bit better, as requested. We will also do a little bit of practicing Rosh Hodesh rituals so you have some material and options to use once you form your own groups. Announcement
Proposal to create a Jewish Community Relations Council
Friends: as you might be aware recent days have seen a dramatic spike in anti-Semitism across the country. More than 30 JCCs and other Jewish institutions were targeted nationally. Closer to home there have been significant and troubling events in Burlington, Middlebury and elsewhere in Vermont.
Unlike other Jewish Communities around the country we have had a fewer organized Jewish institutions, and none locally in the public policy space. Recent events underline the need to engage opinion leaders and policy makers in a more coordinated way.
That is why we propose to create a Jewish Community Relations Council or JCRC as a project of Jewish Communities of VT. JCRC's are unique as they address both the domestic and foreign policy concerns of the local Jewish community.
This is substantially different from the way other organizations which lobby members of Congress like: AIPAC and J Street exclusively focused on US-Israel bi-lateral relations. JCRC'S also focus on activity at home, if there is reason to engage on Israel concerns with Congressional staff it happens largely at home in their district office. By comparison, JCRC's would be the lead engagement agency for the legislature, Scott Administration and Judiciary on issues of a more broad communal concern locally; and function in the same way in more than a hundred communities around the country.
A public interest meeting is being planned in coming days, if you would like to be involved in creating this organization or future JCRC activity please feel free to be in touch with:
Steve May by email at
smaydirect@yahoo.com. Please put JCRC-VT in the subject line.
