| | Important Changes Coming to Recycling in Loyalist Township | |
Starting July 1, 2025, Loyalist Township will transition to a new recycling model called Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Under this model, producers of packaging and paper products will now be responsible for the recycling and management costs, shifting this responsibility from our municipality.
Circular Materials Ontario (CMO) has been appointed to manage recycling services for our catchment area, and Emterra Group has been contracted to handle curbside recycling collection. If residents have questions or experience issues with recycling collection, Emterra will now be their first point of contact.
What Residents Need to Know:
- The current collection schedule will remain unchanged; garbage and recycling pickup will continue on your regularly scheduled day.
- Beginning July 2025, issues or concerns related to recycling collection or bins should be directed to Emterra Group.
- A dedicated depot in Napanee will provide new or replacement recycling bins for residents.
- Amherst Island residents will continue to drop off recyclables at the waste management facility, with Circular Materials Ontario taking over bin management starting July 1, 2025.
Changes for Business Owners: Businesses (Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional – ICI) will no longer receive municipal recycling services as of July 1, 2025. Businesses not already managing their own collection contracts must arrange recycling collection through private contractors. It’s important for businesses to ensure recycling is managed separately from garbage, as combined waste will not be accepted.
Why This Change? The shift to EPR places responsibility on producers to manage the recycling of their products. This aims to improve recycling practices, reduce waste, and support a circular economy by encouraging producers to create more sustainable packaging.
