Supporting Your Student's Transition
Living in Residence is a new experience for many students, offering exciting opportunities and sometimes presenting unique challenges. We encourage you to have open and honest conversations with your student about this transition – how they hope to navigate conflict, relationships with partners and friends, drug and alcohol use, consent, and how they can contribute to a safe environment where all students at Queen's feel welcomed and comfortable.
We want your student to make the most of their time, try new things, meet new people, and hear new thoughts so they can continue to form their own. These critical conversations can be challenging – the first step is to remind your student of certain expectations, opportunities, safety considerations, limits, and consequences, to let them know how to respect themselves and others, and to stay true to who they are and how they have been raised. We know it takes time and dedication to empower students to make great choices while encouraging their independence and keeping up good lines of communication.
Overall, listen to your student – respect their boundaries and needs, allow for flexibility, and check in about changes.
If you are worried about your student, please do reach out to us. Due to confidentiality, we may not be able to provide you with much detailed information, but we still want to hear from you. We will encourage your student to reach back out to you.

Leave the Disposable Packaging Behind
Say goodbye to excessive packaging waste and hello to a more sustainable move-in experience!
If you're helping your student bring their belongings to campus, please encourage your student to pack in reusable bags, plastic totes, laundry baskets, or suitcases/backpacks that can easily stay in Residence for their use.
If using disposable packaging is necessary, consider ways to take it with you on your return trip home for reuse or recycling. Better yet, reuse old items instead of buying new ones!

Top Tips for Move-In Day!
- Please do not bring your family pet
- One vehicle per student – no trailers!
- Follow directions on your colour-printed Zone Card (not Google Maps or other navigation systems)
- Drivers must stay inside the vehicle as you pull up to your building
- 5-minute maximum stay in the unloading zone; student volunteers will be there to help unload your vehicle
- Bring a cart as there are a limited number of carts available
- Your student can start moving their belongings while you go to park. Parking is limited to 3 hours.
- Bring a reusable water bottle (there will be filling stations) and snacks!
- Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes and clothing

Need Help?
If your student has a problem with their computer or ResNet connection, please call the IT Support Centre at (613) 533-6666. View their hours of operation here.
Connect to ResNet
Connecting to our high-speed ResNet system here's what your student needs to know:
-
IT Requirements: To connect to ResNet, ensure your student has a Windows or MacOS based personal computer with a currently supported operating system.
-
Ethernet Connection: A 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet compatible network interface or an available USB port for an external network adapter is necessary for a wired connection.
-
Wireless Internet: If your student's computer is wireless-only, they'll need to bring their own wireless router to connect to ResNet. There are a few buildings that have WiFi built-in. Please check our Buildings page for details.
For more information and specific instructions, visit Residence IT Services.

Allergies or Dietary Needs? We’re Here to Help!
Supporting students with food allergies and other dietary needs is a top priority for Queen’s Hospitality Services. If your student has a food allergy, intolerance, food-related medical condition, follows a diet related to a religious/cultural observance or a vegetarian/vegan diet, they should do the following (if they haven't already):
-
Complete the Food Allergy and Dietary Needs form before arriving to campus
-
Celiac/gluten intolerant students must sign and return the Gluten Free Friendly Pantry waiver (sent to their Queen’s email) to dietitian@queensu.ca no later than August 27, 4 pm ET for access to the Leonard and Jean Royce pantries.
-
Schedule an appointment with our Registered Dietitian to learn about food options and how to make safe and informed dining choices.
Learn more about how we support students dining with allergies and dietary needs, and visit Special Diet Options.
