FDA recall of eye drop products

All facility types

The FDA is warning consumers not to purchase and to immediately stop using 26 over-the-counter eye drop products due to the potential risk of eye infections that could result in partial vision loss or blindness. Patients who have signs or symptoms of an eye infection after using these products should talk to their health care provider or seek medical care immediately. These products are marketed under the following brands:

  • CVS Health
  • Leader (Cardinal Health)
  • Rugby (Cardinal Health)
  • Rite Aid
  • Target Up&Up
  • Velocity Pharma
  • Walmart

CVS, Rite Aid and Target are removing the products from their store shelves and websites. Products branded as Leader, Rugby and Velocity may still be available to purchase in stores and online and should not be purchased.

FDA has not received any adverse event reports of eye infection associated with these products at this time.

Recommendations

FDA recommended the manufacturer of these products recall all lots on October 25, 2023, after agency investigators found insanitary conditions in the manufacturing facility and positive bacterial test results from environmental sampling of critical drug production areas in the facility.

FDA also recommends consumers properly discard these products.

Health professionals and consumers are encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of these products to the FDA's MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting program.

Download the online reporting form or call 1-800-332-1088 to request a form. Mail the completed form to the address listed on the form, or fax to 1-800-FDA-0178.

R/LTCF call slides and upcoming calls

All facility types

During our LTCF call series in October, we reviewed the guidance for managing COVID-19 in your facility. Review the slide deck of this presentation for Nursing Facilities/ICFs and for ALRs/Group Homes.

Join CDPHE on our LTCF call on November 22, 2023 for a workshop to develop a Respiratory Protection Plan from scratch. We will also have our Antimicrobial Stewardship Team on the call on November 8, 2023 to share details on Antibiotic Awareness Week.

11/18-11/24 - U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week and World Antibiotic Awareness Week

All facility types

To recognize U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week, November 18-24, the CDPHE Healthcare-Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance Program is providing updated data and resources for appropriate use of antimicrobials. Antibiotics are one of the most frequently prescribed medications in nursing homes and 40–75% of antibiotics prescribed in nursing homes may be unnecessary or inappropriate.

To support appropriate antibiotic use in nursing homes, CDPHE summarized nationally-recognized guidelines and recommendations into a resource that can be adapted to create facility-specific treatment guidelines. This summary provides information for urinary tract infection, community-acquired bacterial pneumonia, and skin and soft tissue infection. This resource can be used to assist outpatient nursing home antimicrobial stewardship programs to support goals of “right antibiotic,” “right dose,” and “right duration.”

Our Antimicrobial Stewardship in Long-term Care Facilities webpage also has tools such as the Antibiotic Time-out Checklist and Suspected Urinary Tract Infection Action Tool that can be utilized by nurses and members of a care team. CDC provides resources and handouts for U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week in their partner toolkit.

Join us for U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week Nov. 18-24 and spread the word about the importance of improving antibiotic use, improving health equity, and combating antimicrobial resistance. Contact the Healthcare-Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance Program at cdphe_hai_ar@state.co.us with any questions or feedback and let us know what you are doing to recognize the week!

CDC's 2023-2024 updated COVID-19 vaccines and up to date definition

Nursing Facilities and Intermediate Care Facilities

For facilities reporting data on health care personnel though the COVID-19 Vaccination Module of the Healthcare Personnel Safety Component:

Key points:

CDC recommendations for the updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccines:

  • Everyone aged 6 months and older should receive the 2023-2024 updated COVID-19 vaccine to protect against serious illness from COVID-19 and to remain up to date.

Impact to the NHSN surveillance up to date definition:

  • Individuals are considered up to date (beginning the reporting week Nov. 25, 2023 – Oct. 1, 2023) if they have received a 2023-2024 updated COVID-19 vaccine, or if they received a bivalent COVID-19 vaccine within the last two months.
  • Under the new recommendations, most health care personnel will not be up to date with COVID-19 vaccines as of Sept. 25, 2023. This is normal and expected.
  • Facilities should report zero (0) up to date until individuals receive the 2023-2024 updated COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Personnel will become up to date as they receive the 2023-2024 updated COVID-19 vaccine this fall/winter.

Respiratory virus resources

All facility types

When an acute respiratory infection is identified in a resident or health care provider, it is important to take rapid action to prevent the spread to others in the facility. While decisions about treatment, prophylaxis, and the recommended duration of insolation vary depending on the pathogen, IPC strategies, such as placement of the resident in a single-person room, use of a facemask for source control, and physical distancing, are the same regardless of the pathogen. Below are a few resources that your facility may find helpful for this current viral respiratory season.
