This March, we’re supporting Food Waste Action week by encouraging people to reduce the amount of food they throw away and to recycle any food that does get wasted, using a food waste caddy.
With over 4.5 million tonnes of edible food wasted from UK homes each year, and the food production industry generating 30% of the world’s CO2 greenhouse gasses, wasting food has a huge impact on climate change, as well as on your wallet.
Ideally, there wouldn’t be any food waste but in reality, there will always be peelings, scraps, eggshells, teabags etc, that need to be recycled. If you don’t already use one, a food waste caddy is a good way to ensure that your food waste is put to good use.

Grants available for non-profit voluntary groups
If you, or someone you know, are involved with a non-profit community or voluntary group in the Royal Borough, you can now apply for our 2021/22 community grants scheme.
A total of £100,000 in grant funding is available for non-profit groups in the borough, with funding available for long-term projects such as improving existing facilities and buying new equipment, or short-term support for funding upcoming events.
Last year’s recipients of the grant include Age Concern in Windsor who were awarded £1,861 to repair damaged sewer pipes and Elizabeth House in Cookham who were awarded £4,000 to assist with day-to-day operations.
Grants will be awarded by a panel on Tuesday 11 May 2021, with funds paid out from the end of May to successful applicants.

With schools set to reopen from Monday 8 March, you may notice signs outside schools reminding parents and guardians to turn off their engines, not leave them idling, when picking up or dropping off children.
The signs aim to help improve air quality, make healthy choices on school travel and remind parents dropping off or picking up their children to allow space for social distancing.
We are also reminding parents and guardians to keep their distance at the school gates as people will want to catch-up with each other but that increases the chance of COVID-19 transmission.

Maidenhead roundabout works
Work on Oldfield Road roundabout in Maidenhead will begin on Monday 8 March. The work will replace the existing roundabout with a traffic lit junction to improve the flow of traffic and make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the junctions.
As part of these works, Oldfield Road will be closed overnight from Monday 8 to Wednesday 10 March from 8pm to 6am.
The works are part of a £6m road improvement scheme in the Royal Borough aimed at improving six key roundabouts in Maidenhead. To learn more about the scheme please read our press release.

UK Census 2021
This week, everyone in England will start receiving their pack for the Census which takes place on Sunday 21 March 2021.
The pack will show you how to complete the census form online with your code on census day.
The census is a survey that happens every 10 years and helps to build a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales to help plan and fund public services such as transport, education and healthcare.
By taking part and encouraging others to do the same, you’ll help make sure you and your community get the services you need.

Refreshments for emergency services and NHS staff from Windsor hotel
The Castle Hotel in Windsor is offering complimentary refreshments including soup, snacks and drinks for all on-duty emergency services and NHS staff.
Local businesses including Waitrose, Bidfood and Nescafe have also donated additional refreshments for eligible workers.
The refreshments are available from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

National youth climate talks to be held at Cumberland Lodge, Windsor ahead of UN global summit
Young people aged 17 to 25 from across the UK will take part in a youth climate conference at Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park from Tuesday 9 to Wednesday 17 March.
The conference will explore topics such as including environmental sustainability in school curriculums, the responsibility of businesses to invest in low-carbon opportunities and the wider implications of climate change.
Several local schools will be taking part including sixth formers from Windsor Girls School and Eton College.

You must respond to your child’s secondary, middle or upper school place offer by Monday 15 March 2021.
You can accept or decline the offer via the admissions portal if you applied online.
If you applied on paper, you will not be able to access the admissions portal. You have already been sent an application outcome letter by first class post on Monday 1 March, this will provide information on how to respond to your child’s offer. If your letter is not delivered, a copy will be sent out by post no sooner than Monday 8 March 2021.

Town forum meetings
If you’d like to have your say in future town forum meetings, where issues affecting Maidenhead and Windsor town centres are discussed, we want to hear from you.
Agendas are published a week in advance so you can see what councillors will be discussing and get involved if there is something you are interested in.
Suggestions for discussion will be added to a future agenda if appropriate.
The next meeting of the Maidenhead Town Forum is on Wednesday 31 March and Windsor Town Forum is on Wednesday 24 March.

Upcoming Windsor rail line closures
The Windsor rail line between Staines and Windsor & Eton Riverside will be closed from 12.45am on Saturday 6 March to 5am on Saturday 13 March, due to engineering works carried out by Network Rail. Rail services from London to Windsor will terminate at Staines for the duration of these works. Rail replacement bus services will be in operation.
During these works, Datchet and Mays level crossings will be closed for up to 15 minutes at a time on Sunday 7 March between 7am and 9am to allow for specific tasks to be completed. Otherwise, they will remain open as normal.

Number 10 bus route cancelled
From Sunday 4 April 2021, the number 10 bus route provided by Courtney Buses, which runs from Heathrow Airport to Dedworth, via Poyle, Wraysbury, Sunnymeads and Datchet, will stop running.
This service relies on financial support from Heathrow Airport in order to operate. Unfortunately, this funding has recently been ended which is why the number 10 route is closing.
The Royal Borough is currently looking into a solution for the children entitled to council support for home to school transport which relies on the number 10 route. This solution will be in place after the Easter holidays while long-term options are considered.

The M4 will be closed in both directions between junctions 5 (Langley) and 6 (Slough) from 8pm on Friday 5 March to 6am on Monday 8 March 2021.
