Huge turnout to local Platinum Jubilee celebrations
Thank you to everyone who attended, hosted or organised events to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen's Platinum Jubilee over the bank holiday weekend.
|
|
We were pleased to welcome more than 2,000 people to Windsor Guildhall across two days, giving everyone the opportunity to explore the historic building which has close ties to the Royal Family.
There was a massive turnout to our official beacon lighting and fireworks on the Long Walk on Thursday 2 June, with an estimated 50,000 people attending.
During the Bank Holiday weekend, more than 50 street parties were held by communities across the Royal Borough. Other jubilee events including the Ox Roast, Picnic in the Park, and the Big Lunch also saw good attendance.
We hope that the range of events on offer over the weekend gave residents and visitors a chance to feel part of the celebrations, as well as enjoy the historic heart of our borough.
If you haven't already done so, you can still visit our fascinating Jubilee photographic exhibition, which continues at local libraries until the end of June. See our press release for details.

Helping Royal Ascot to run smoothly for everyone
Royal Ascot is next week and we’re once again providing support to help this large and prestigious event in our borough to run smoothly. We’re working closely with organisers at the racecourse, Thames Valley Police and other partners to help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time, and the impact on the wider community is appropriately managed.
Taking place from Tuesday 14 to Saturday 18 June, the horse racing festival is estimated to bring an estimated 276,000 visitors to Ascot Racecourse over the five days. If you’re in the Ascot area next week, please be aware that event organisers will have temporary traffic management in place from Tuesday to Saturday. Visit the Ascot website for details.
If you live in the Ascot area, please put out your bin for collection on Monday as usual. Unlike some previous years, there’s no need for a different collection day this year.
Our Community Wardens will be focussing on tackling the ticket touts, liaising with our CCTV operators and the police to help keep everyone safe. The CCTV operators will be monitoring for criminal activity and suspicious behaviour, welfare and safety issues, and crowd control issues.
Our Trading Standards team will be doing test purchasing to ensure accurate alcohol measures are served at bars. They’ll also check traders are following other trading rules in place to protect customers and the public, such as tobacco regulations, accurate food labelling and logging refusals of underage sales.
Our Environmental Health team will be inspecting a range of food outlets, from celebrity chef kitchens to food trucks, looking at food standards, food handling, facilities and food safety management. Meanwhile, the Licensing team will be monitoring the taxi rank, working alongside with the police to ensure its authorised use, and monitoring licensable activity at bars.

World Cafés coming to your ward
A new style of community engagement starts in the Royal Borough with the first World Café event for the wards of Clewer East and Clewer & Dedworth East, on Wednesday 15 June.
The best ideas and solutions often develop through informal discussions rather than more formal processes. The World Café format enables inclusive and open conversations to better understand communities’ views and knowledge on a set topic.
They are a great opportunity to share your opinions and concerns with local
organisations and partners to find community-based solutions for that set topic.. The Clewer East and Clewer & Dedworth East event will consider the rising cost of living.
There are plans to hold World Cafes in every ward across the borough during the coming year. Find out more about these, and how to book, on the RBWM Together website.

Love Your Community – Getting community initiatives rolling
As part of our “Love Your Community” communications campaign, we’re highlighting our work helping residents to start up successful community groups and initiatives around issues that matter most to communities.
Community-led solutions can be very effective and sustainable, however people with ideas and enthusiasm often need support to get their projects off the ground. This is where the council can help.
Asset Based Community Development is about driving positive community action around local needs and aspirations, building supportive groups and creating opportunities for meaningful engagement.
Our officers can assist you to shape your plans, connect with others who can help you too, set up formally as a group and access external funding opportunities.
If you have an idea and need help to get started, please come to the World
Windsor Cycle Hub
One group we supported to get on the “road to success” is Windsor Cycle Hub. This volunteer-run charity, which has just celebrated its first birthday, aims to encourage cycling within Windsor and surrounding villages.
The group meets at The Swan pub at Clewer on Saturday mornings and all are welcome to come along for a ride. At 11am their Bike Kitchen opens for free basic repairs and safety checks. There’s a guided ride each week at 11.30am.
David Bonney, from the cycle hub, said: “We’re grateful for the Royal Borough’s support, it’s helped us to equip our workshop and to publicise our activities.
"The council also introduced us to the Prince Philip Trust Fund and Abri, who’ve provided additional funding for training.”
The group is currently seeking more volunteers: bike mechanics, people to go on rides, first aiders, social media gurus and people to meet and greet on Saturday mornings. If you’re interested, come to The Swan on the second Tuesday of the month at 7pm.
