The La Alma Lincoln Park neighborhood is one of Denver’s oldest residential neighborhoods and was home to many important events and leaders connected to the Chicano Movement. On March 22, 2021, community members and residents of the neighborhood, in partnership with Historic Denver, applied to designate the La Alma Lincoln Park neighborhood as Denver’s newest Historic Cultural District. If designated, the La Alma Lincoln Park Historic Cultural District would preserve Denver’s rich cultural history by protecting buildings and significant sites connected to our Latino/Chicano community.

Update: 123 Speer Blvd. designation
123 Speer Blvd
After a robust deliberation on April 6, the Landmark Preservation Commission (LPC) voted 6-1 to recommend approval of the designation application and forwarded it to the Land Use, Transportation & Infrastructure committee (LUTI). On April 20, LUTI determined that this designation was ready to advance to City Council.

Even though this owner-opposed designation application is advancing to City Council, Community Planning and Development staff is still actively working with the applicants and owners to find a win-win scenario that would increase density while still preserving the tower.

About Landmark Preservation
landmark marker
Landmark preservation is an important function of Denver Community Planning and Development. Denver City Council enacted the Denver Landmark Ordinance in 1967 to foster the protection, enhancement, perpetuation and use of structures and districts of historical, architectural, geographic and/or cultural significance.

Staff in our Landmark Preservation office and two landmark commissions carry out that mission through design review, historic surveys and landmark designations. Staff also assists owners of historic properties by providing guidance and resources for preserving, maintaining and rehabilitating historic buildings and properties.
