Two New Resiliency & Trauma-Informed Practices Workshop Series

Arizona Department of Education in partnership with Ricky Robertson from Corwin Press would like to invite you to participate in two FREE virtual Resiliency and Social Emotional Learning workshop series that will provide intentional professional learning on educator self-care, understanding behavior as communication , and trauma sensitive social emotional learning .

COVID has changed our landscape making this support for educators and students an essential first step to support academic achievement.  The workshop series are for teachers, teacher teams, administrators, leadership teams, paraprofessionals, social workers, counselors and other support staff. School and district leaders can enroll their whole school teams for these sessions.

The first 4-part series will focus on the following topics and embed practical application of returning to school and addressing current needs.

Building Resilience Webinar Series

Session 1 Introduction on Building Resilience
September 15: 3 PM to 5 PM

We will explore the prevalence and impact of ACEs and trauma on brain development, learning, behavior, and social-emotional development. Participants will develop a common language and understanding that will allow them to effectively teach and lead. They will deepen their understanding of the protective factors that foster resilience and success for educators and their students. Participants will also complete a school self-assessment to determine their readiness and next steps for building a resilient school.

Session 2 Put your Oxygen Mask on First: Educator Resilience & Self Care

July 30: 3 PM to 5 PM
September 16: 3 PM to 5 PM

Participates will delve into the importance of social-emotional health for educators. Participants will develop tools to support the well-being and resilience of themselves and their colleagues.
 
Session 3 Behavior as a Form of Communication

July 31 : 3 PM to 5 PM
September 17 : 3 PM to 5 PM

We will explore student behavior as a form of communication and develop strategies to support the behavioral and social-emotional needs of all students. Participants will deepen their understanding of relationship-based teaching and acquire skills to foster safety, trust, and belonging in their classrooms and schools. They will be introduced to strategies that support students’ abilities to communicate, problem-solve, regulate, and develop a sense of accountability and hope.

Session 4 Trauma Informed Social Emotional Learning

August 4: 9 AM to 11 AM
September 3: 9 AM to 11 AM & 3 PM to 5 PM
September 18: 3 PM to 5 PM

Participants will develop a plan for integrating social-emotional learning competencies into their curriculum and instruction. Participants will be introduced to in-the-moment strategies to use to remain calm during, and recover from, students’ behavioral escalations. Participants will also develop insight into ways that their level of escalation can impact student behavior both positively and negatively. Finally, participants will learn about school-wide practices that can be implemented in their school to support educator resilience.

Trauma-Informed Practices Webinar Series

Equity and Trauma Informed Practices for Students and Families

August 13: 9 AM to 11 AM
September 9: 9 AM to 11 AM
September 22: 3 PM to 5 PM

We will explore trauma through an equity lens. Participants will learn about historical and cumulative trauma and the ways that they impact students of marginalized communities and identities. We will explore culturally responsive teaching practices that foster resilience by affirming students in their cultures and identities.

Tier 1 Building Foundational Trauma Informed Practices Schoolwide

August 27: 3 PM to 5 PM
September 23: 3 PM to 5 PM

Participates will explore how to develop a schoolwide approach to address the social emotional needs of staff and students, how to have equitable representation and key data sets to evaluate to determine impact. We will also discuss how to develop a plan for schoolwide implementation and staff development.

Trauma Informed Restorative Strategies and Practices for Tier 1

August 10: 9 AM to 11 AM
September 10: 3 PM to 5 PM
September 24: 3 PM to 5 PM
Participants will be introduced to Tier 1 community building circles for both staff and students. Then we will explore the core principles of Restorative Practices and some useful tools to engage in restorative dialogue and problem-solving. Participants will consider next steps for integrating these principles and practices into their classrooms and schools.

Trauma Informed & Restorative Practices for Tiered Support

August 14: 3 PM to 5 PM
September 11: 3 PM to 5 PM
September 25: 3 PM to 5 PM
Participants will learn to create trauma-informed intervention plans for students who require intensive social-emotional and behavioral supports. The session concludes with a conversation on how to support staff and students when they return to school after a crisis has impacted their family and/or community.
