Are You Wildfire Smoke Ready?
Wildfire Community Preparedness Day is all about helping neighbors and community members work together to create safety from wildfires. Have you thought about ALL the impacts a wildfire in our region may have? In addition to loss of life and property damage, health risks from poor air quality and disaster debris can also create significant hazards. Learn more about protecting yourself from the dangers of air pollution and exposure to smoke with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Smoke-Ready Toolbox for Wildfires.
Hurricanes Aren't Just a Coastal Worry
The Shenandoah Valley is no stranger to the damage hurricanes can cause. During Hurricane Preparedness Week 2019, take some time to understand and prepare for this season's potential challenges. WHSV-TV3's retrospective of hurricanes that have touched our region provides plenty of good reasons to be more hurricane resilient! Brush up your readiness with these Hurricane Safety Tips and Resources from the National Weather Service.
Hurricane Awareness Tour to Stop in Roanoke
Hurricane experts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will visit five U.S. East Coast cities, flying aboard a USAF Reserve WC-130J Hurricane Hunter aircraft along with the NOAA Lockheed WP-3D Orion aircraft, to raise awareness of the impacts from tropical cyclones threats and the danger of being caught without a personal hurricane plan.

One of the stops on the 2019 Hurricane Awareness Tour will be Roanoke, VA. This stop will occur at the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport, on Wednesday, May 8, 2019.

Community groups, media, elected officials, select local schools (schools by invitation only), and the public are invited to participate and tour the aircraft and exhibits. Public tours will be given from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.   Registration is not required for the public tours. Due to the schedule of the aircraft crew, public tours will promptly end at 5:00 pm.
