Community Health Workers What's new: Our recent blog post on Community Mental Health Care Workers (CMHCW) describes the role they can play in supporting behavioral health. Why it matters: With preventative approaches and tailored support to help community members achieve individualized health goals, CMHCWs can help communities achieve greater physical and mental health outcomes. Delivering TIC and preventing/reducing ACEs What's new: Building on our National Scan Chapter 1: Trauma-informed Care and ACEs Prevention Efforts, this new chapter investigates evaluation efforts of the highest rated state-wide initiatives that aim to deliver Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) and prevent or reduce Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Why it matters: This investigation was designed to learn from our peers, assess best practices of Collective Impact evaluation efforts of similar initiatives, and to build upon evaluation methods to support Resilient Georgia’s efforts across the state of Georgia. 9-8-8 What's new: The new three-digit Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, 9-8-8, launched on July 16 and is for people who are experiencing a mental health or substance abuse crisis. Why it matters: Data from the first 45 days show that Calls were answered quickly - 7.4 seconds on average 476 rescues of people whose lives were believed to be in danger Rural South Georgians called at higher rates than their urban counterparts Go deeper: This update from the AJC describes the hotline's success.

Integrated Behavioral Health improves care for kids What's new: Earlier this summer, we completed the National Landscape Scan of Integrated Behavioral Health. Integrated behavioral health (IBH) in pediatric primary care. In this model, a collaborative team of primary care providers and behavioral health specialists provide systematic, cost-effective, patient-centered care. Why it matters: Integrated behavioral health in pediatric primary care provides an exciting opportunity to improve mental health care for children and adolescents. Raising resilience What's new: Our partners at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's Strong4Life initiative launched their Raising Resilience campaign to help raise resilience at every age. From navigating feelings to building independence and problem-solving, their expert content has you covered with tips and strategies for building your child’s resilience as they grow. Go deeper: This video featuring the Lampley family illustrates how talking about feelings openly, regularly and in everyday moments helps the family cope with the loss of their youngest, Legend.

Regional Coalition News

A pat on the back Congratulations to Lizann Roberts on her nomination for a Peacebuilder Award. The award presentation was a part of Savannah’s Day of Peace. Organized by the Meditation Center of the Coastal Empire, the day connected community members to resources to “resolve conflicts before it escalates.” Read more about the Savannah Day of Peace and the Peacebuilder Award here.  LaDonna Collins from Building a Region of Resilience NWGA has been selected as one of the four people from Georgia to be on the Amerigroup Health Equity Council.  This Georgia Trend spotlight on the Mental Health Parity Act highlights the powerful work of the Behavioral Health and Reform Commission. Philip Gentry from Resilient Southwest Georgia (Albany) has been recognized as a 2022 Rural Leader Magazine 40 Under Forty Honoree. This award highlights exceptional and dedicated leaders across Florida, Georgia and Alabama.

Training Opportunities

Mark your calendar Mark your calendar for DECAL’s Third Annual Summit on Trauma and Resilience: Building a Community Response to Childhood Trauma, Nov. 19 OR Dec. 3. This is a FREE virtual event.  Invite and Zoom Link coming soon! Join us Dec. 15 for our General Meeting, which will showcase Round 2 regional coalitions based out of Albany, Columbus, Rome, and Thomasville and surrounding areas Round 4 regional coalitions based out of Atlanta, Brunswick, Gainesville, and Waycross and surrounding areas.   Save the date! Mental Health Day at the Capitol from 9 a.m. to noon on Jan. 31, 2023. Anyone whose life is impacted by mental health concerns is welcome. There will be ways to participate virtually or in person. Stay tuned.
