Dear UTMB School of Nursing Community,
Our mission is to improve the health of diverse populations in Texas and around the world by advancing nursing excellence through leadership, clinical practice, education, research, and service. Guided by our strategic plan, our School of Nursing responded to this pandemic by simultaneously adapting the curriculum to a virtual environment while also upholding the high-quality education for which we are known.
I am extremely proud to say that our mission never paused throughout this global crisis. In fact, we used these important pillars of our mission to guide us in intentional and meaningful ways and applied the lessons learned to our ongoing strategic planning process.

As a community, we understand that it isn’t enough to merely make it through trying times, but to be agile and bold in our efforts and to learn from the challenging experiences. As we continue to forge new paths through these public and global health crises, I am confident in our school’s ability to lead because our mission and values will remain our North Star.

MAINTAINING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
THROUGHOUT THE PANDEMIC
|
|
Our School of Nursing transitioned more than
40 individual courses
from face-to-face or hybrid experiences to 100% remote/online-only offerings across our
11 different nursing programs
in only
8 days
. Along with all didactic content, all laboratory and clinical activities were also moved from the traditional, in-person, campus-based events to meaningful virtual experiences. Additionally, our high-impact research contributions have continued during the pandemic. Over the last two months, our faculty have submitted
13 research grants
related to behavioral health and the COVID-19 pandemic.

ACTIVE LEARNING IN A VIRTUAL CLASSROOM
|
|
Our SON faculty are continuing to deliver outstanding education in innovative new ways. As an alternative to traditional simulation lab activities, Assistant Professors Dr. Jacquelyn Svoboda, Dr. Dora Martin, and Shannon Stevenson are leading a virtual sim-lab that students are finding highly beneficial.
“Sim-lab is something that students look forward to, and I was hesitant in the potential success of online delivery but was pleasantly surprised,” BSN student Kristen Cole shared. “It was similar to the same amount of information I would learn in a traditional sim-lab. It was incredibly helpful to have a small group instruction style, and I appreciate that all of us got ample opportunity to share and work through the nursing interventions at the ‘bedside.’”
