The Resilient Columbus coalition in conjunction with Columbus County Partnership of Children (Smart Start) is partnering with the local faith community to sponsor a screening of the film, Resilience: The Biology of Stress and The Science of Hope. The documentary can be viewed via streaming on November 18, at 10 am. Individuals wishing to view the presentation should contact Jai Robinson to receive the streaming link and password.
Through many clinical studies and research, we have learned that child or adult behaviors aren’t always about what is wrong with someone, but more about what has happened to that person. Columbus County has an opportunity to see how the effects of childhood trauma can impact an individual for the rest of his or her life.
The Resilient Columbus Coalition is a collaboration of several community service agencies, faith leaders and individuals to address issues related to childhood and adult traumatic experiences. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events that occur between birth and 17 years of age and are linked to chronic health problems, mental illness, and substance abuse and misuse problems in adulthood. ACEs can also negatively impact education, job opportunities, and earning potential. Fortunately, ACEs can be addressed and prevented through Resiliency. Resilience is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, or significant sources of stress.
The landmark Kaiser Permanente ACEs Study is highlighted in the film, along with Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, Surgeon General of California. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to participate in the movement to transform Columbus County into a trauma-informed and resilient community.
