STUDENT PROFILE: SAMARA LIJIAM
Meet the Social Issues Commissioner
Yellow House EDI Student Assistant, Ayden Adeyanju Jackson, chats with Samara on her role as the Social Issues Commissioner, what she enjoys about doing equity work at Queen's and her biggest issues she'd like to address this year. "I think like a lot of people who do equity work, I am a pretty sensitive person. The first SIC I worked with, Myriam-Morenike Djossou, was very empathetic and I am really trying to channel that in my time as SIC. I think everyone who has been in this role has done it out of care for others and the community, so empathy is important. " Read more here.
MEET NEW GENDER AND SEXUAL DIVERSTY ADVISOR, KEL MARTIN
Greetings! My name is Kel, and I’m a queer, trans, and non-binary OCT certified art/drama teacher, artist, researcher, and person who does a vast range of work in my queer community both at Queen’s and in the wider Kingston community. I am honoured and excited to be joining the Yellow House team as your new Sexual and Gender Diversity Advisor this fall. I have spent many years working as a leader in various social and support groups such as GSA, trans support groups, Pride, and other queer spaces. I have been working in the Queen’s community on various sexual and gender diversity focused projects for years. One of the working groups I have been involved with is called PAGGAS and is currently improving gender neutral washrooms on campus. I look forward to continuing my work with PAGGAS to improve the name change process at Queen’s. I am thrilled to begin my work with Yellow House and lay important groundwork for this position, all while engaging in committees and working groups to create meaningful change at Queen’s and continuing to engage in the queer community. I look forward to bringing you events and resources in the coming months, listening to concerns and assisting, as well as collaborating with you to bring your visions to life. Learn more.
