High Quality Child Care: Assessing Child Care Programs

Interactions are the building blocks of a quality child care program. This includes interactions between providers and children, staff and parents, and between the children themselves. It also includes the ways that children interact with the materials, activities, and the environment around them. Child care providers that reflect and pay attention to these connections are building quality into their program.

Questions to ask:

What do the interactions between parents and providers or providers and children look like?

Are there materials or activities that interest children?

Are there opportunities for children to express themselves?

What does the environment look like from a child’s perspective?

Providers: if you would like to explore ways to assess your program and build the quality of your interactions, contact us, and ask for Resource and Referral.

Parents: If you would like to learn more about choosing high quality child care, check out our High Quality Child Care Booklet at

Parents and caregivers can support children’s healthy development by engaging children in play and learning. Visit HELP ME GROW Sacramento to find resources and activities for children at every stage of their growth.

Book Review

The Cot in the Living Room

This kind and empathetic story by Hilda Eunice Burgos and illustrated by Gaby D’Alessandro highlights a view of child care that is rarely seen in a children’s picture book, families that need overnight child care. Raquel is jealous of the children that stay overnight with her family on the cot in the living room until she gets the chance to try it and realizes that the visiting children might be anxious and miss their parents.

Lead Hazard Reduction Resources

The Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency (SHRA) has a new lead hazard reduction program and is offering home owners grants up to $10,000 per housing unit for lead paint repairs to help prevent lead poisoning. Details and contact information on the flyer below.

Family Empowerment Centers

The California Department of Education (CDE), Special Education Division is pleased to announce the establishment of additional Family Empowerment Centers (FECs) in regions of the state that previously did not possess a center.

FECs provide training and information to families of children and young adults with disabilities, between the ages of 3 and 22 in California. These nonprofit organizations offer specialized training, peer-to-peer support, information, and referral services. They aim to assist parents to better understand their child’s educational and developmental needs, effectively communicate with service providers, serve as a resource for the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process, participate in school reform and improvement activities, promote alternative dispute resolution, and support positive relationships between parents and professionals.
