Resources to Support Interactional Practices

The DEC Recommended Practices remind us that “ sensitive and responsive interactional practices are the foundation for promoting the development of a child’s language, cognitive and emotional competence. ” This issue highlights free resources for learning about and using the recommended practices for interaction
Visit the interaction section of the ECTA RP website to discover a variety of tools. Checklists are available to support adult-child interaction, child-child interaction, and practices related to social-communication inter-action and social-emotional competence. Practice guides for families and professionals look at applications within home, classroom, and other every day learning environments. All resources are available to view or download, and family practice guides are also available in Spanish.
This online module focuses on building the sensitive and responsive interactions that support children’s development in language, cognitive, and emotional competence. Several videos are included for practice in watching and thinking about how a child's behavior can be used to identify and interpret the child's interests, abilities, and emotions. Content related to infant, toddler, and preschool interactions and resources for instructors are among the resources included.
This section of the Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center includes multiple illustrations for learning about, applying, and mastering recommended interactional practices. Videos, archived webinars, matrices, and handouts highlight how practitioners and families can support each and every child, and especially those at risk for, or diagnosed with, disabilities.
Starting this month, DEC is making the resource sections of the DEC Recommended Practices monographs available
online. The interaction resource section offers 10 pages of free resources on the characteristics of responsive interactions and on building supportive contexts for interaction. Resources for building parent and family interaction and classroom/peer interaction are provided.
This article describes research on the engagement and adult and peer interaction of young children with a range of disabilities in free play, group, and meal-routine activities in inclusive childcare settings. Check it out to learn what the findings show about planning activities, the role of adults in promoting higher levels of engagement and interaction, and choosing the right activity type in which to embed systematic planned interventions.
This 2-minute video explains why "serve and return" interaction between children and significant adults in their lives is one of the most essential experiences in shaping the architecture of the developing brain.
