DEC Recommended Practices Resources
Camille Catlett July 2018
The DEC Recommended Practices were developed to provide guidance to practitioners and families about the most effective ways to improve the learning outcomes and promote the development of young children, birth through age 5, who have or are at-risk for developmental delays or disabilities. This issue of Resources within Reason highlights free resources for learning about, using, and sharing the practices.
The first monograph in the series, Enhancing Services for Young Children with Disabilities and Their Families , begins with a history of the recommended practices, as well as an account of how the most recent revisions were made. The first two chapters of this book are available to read or download from the DEC website.
With which terms do professionals need familiarity to successfully understand and implement the Recommended Practices? This resource lists them all.
One way to help practitioners to see the value of the recommended practices is by providing examples of what that might look like. Rather than inventing examples to use in teaching, supervision, or coaching, this resource highlights specific examples of what skillful use of the practices might look like in home, community, and program settings.
Each Practice Guide features a recommended practice, describes how to do the practice, offers an illustrative vignette and a short video of the practice, and lists suggestions for additional resources. Practice Guides for Practitioners and Families are now available in all seven areas of practices, in web and mobile device formats. The Family Practice Guides are available in English and Spanish.

The Early Childhood Recommended Practice Modules were developed for early care and education, early intervention, and early childhood special education faculty and professional development providers to use within their coursework and trainings. These modules are designed to support the implementation of the DEC Recommended Practices. This free interactive, multimedia module can be easily accessed, down-loaded, and used in coursework and professional development sessions. There are accompanying instructor supports and a learning guide to support use of the modules, as well as a brief introduction on navigating the modules.
