Respect and Responsibility
This August issue is focused on two of the most important traits of great leaders- Respect & Responsibility. Making sure that they are in balance is key. Too much or too little of either can result in a leadership style that is off kilter.

There are many examples of people who balance respect and responsibility in a way that inspires others. Hala Moddelmog, former CEO of the Metro Atlanta Chamber, and the 2020 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for Leadership Character is one of those leaders.

Our goal this month is to share thoughtful content to educate and provoke action as well as provide you with tools and resources to help you balance these two sides of the scale. We hope to answer the question-what can I as one person do to create a positive change in myself?

The Task of a Leader: Balancing Respect and Responsibility

By Bob & Lyn Turknett
Co-founders & co-chairs TLG
Leadership can come from anywhere, but wherever you see leadership emerge, we would argue that you will see what we call the “fundamental balance” - the balance of respect and responsibility. Anyone in Atlanta on Aug. 20, 2013 saw that balance demonstrated for the world to see by a school bookkeeper. We woke up that morning to news of a gunman with an AK-47 in a school. No one knew what would happen, and no one knew that we would learn so much about leadership.

In 1994, we began thinking hard about the core of leadership - what was the essence?

The Timeless Turknett Leadership Character Model
By Tino Mantella
President & CEO TLG

In 1995, when Bob and Lyn Turknett finalized the Leadership Character Model, I wonder if they knew it would withstand the test of time? How could they have imagined that the four tenets on the “Respect” side of the scale (empathy, lack of blame, emotional mastery, and humility) would be discussed more broadly today than, I believe, at any time in the history of this country.

What we are reading?
TLG President & CEO

Goodwin draws upon the four presidents she has studied most closely--Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson (in civil rights)--to show how they recognized leadership qualities within themselves and were recognized as leaders by others.

Leadership
Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.

“When people don't respect one another seldom is there honesty.”
           -Shannon L. Alder

VP Strategic Services TLG

by Isabel Wilkerson

Isabel Wilkerson, Pulitzer Prize winner, describes an American caste system where race is a key determinate, and compares it with the caste systems in India and Nazi Germany. Caste is an artificial hierarchy that grants or withholds respect and status, privileges and resources.
I expect this thought-provoking, highly readable book will be on several Top-10 lists this year.
