Gala Magic Approximately 200 people enjoyed fine dining and laughter at the Chateau Lacombe ballroom during our recent Walk In My Shoes Gala, and encouraged by Auctioneer Danny Hooper, contributed a wonderful $125,000 towards our programs, services and operations at Pilgrims Hospice. Artist Lewis Lavoie (pictured left with Danny Hooper), poignantly described hospice as a place to live fully until you die. He magically wove this sentiment into his vibrant creation, which began as a tree of life and transformed into a beautiful dancer, expressing movement and the celebration of life. Other auction items included a week in Croatia; a champagne brunch for 30; and tickets for 4 to see Madonna at Northlands - and many more, all contributed by generous donors with our thanks. Our fun raffle, with a chance to win one of 10 amazing cakes donated by the Wild Earth Bakery, created quite a stir... as a lucky winner, which one would you choose?
Special thanks to our presenting sponsor, Flaman Group of Companies; our event sponsors Eddie's menswear, The Butler Did It and Ackards Construction; and to
our dedicated committee of volunteers, who contributed many hours to make the evening such a
success.

Volunteer Stars
With two events at the beginning of May, each depending so much on volunteer help, it's impossible to choose just one Volunteer of the month!
Heather Shaw and Jean Dowling get special mentions this month, for not only tirelessly planning our Walk In My Shoes Gala but Heather also hiked & fundraised, while Jean & husband Graeme welcomed hikers & flipped burgers, for our Hike for Hospice - you truly are Volunteer Stars!

Jennifer Pothier was overwhelmed by the death of her baba (grandma) and the grief she experienced but didn't understand. Through our Expressive Arts for Grieving Children, Teens and Families program, she learned not only that her feelings were okay, but also how to express them in healthy ways.
" I remember everyone listening to me and how respected, honoured, valued, and validated I felt. Sitting next to other children who had lost a loved one helped reverse my loneliness." Read more...

This year's Hike was full of sunshine, smiles and big hearts! Mindy Olson, pictured above with her Arbor Memorial team mates, said:
"Hospice care is very close to my heart. When a member of your family is dying, having a comfortable and compassionate place for your family to gather and receive support makes such a difference. Hospices fill a vital role in society, and need support to educate people and get the word out about just how special hospice care is. Hiking for Hospice is a great way to pay it forward."
With help from great hiking teams and Insight Insurance, Planet Organic, Starbucks,Truly Divine Healing, Traffic Solutions Consulting and Lorac Construction, we raised $8,800 for our hospice programs - Way to Go teams and sponsors!
Pui, who attends our Adult Respite Day Program, delighted us by joining the Hike with two grand-children and his son, Paul. Read more about Paul and Pui's journey with Pilgrims Hospice here.

This month, Pilgrims Hospice Society is saying farewell to one of its longest standing volunteers. Shirley Bell has been an integral part of the Pilgrims Day Program since the day of her arrival in June 2001. She has played a major part in the success of the program and her contributions are immeasurable. As anyone who knows her will tell you, Shirley could run as Poster child for Volunteer of the Year! Over time, the clients and staff have shared many special moments with Shirley, and these moments have made a difference in all of the lives she touched. Not only was Shirley known for her lunchtime jokes, trivia, crafting and archives work, but she was also known for her kindness, dependability and warmth. If there was a new client in the room, Shirley was always there to make sure they felt welcomed. Shirley - your time, efforts, your warmth, generosity and genuine caring have been more than appreciated and will always be remembered. From everyone at Pilgrims Hospice, staff, clients and volunteers, we THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts! |
