Mary McLeod Bethune
(1875-1955)

In 1935 Mary McLeod Bethune founded the National Council of Negro Women and that same year was appointed by President Roosevelt as Director of the Division of Negro Affairs of the National Youth Administration.

One day, when going through the main gate to the White House to visit her friend, Eleanor Roosevelt,  Mrs. Bethune was disrespected by a white security guard. "Hello Auntie," the guard said when he stopped her at the gate.

"Excuse me," said Mrs. Bethune.  "And which one of my brother's children are you?"

For I am my mother's daughter
and the drums of Africa still beat in my heart.
They will not let me rest
while there is a single Negro boy or girl
without a chance to prove his worth.
