Responding to Gun Violence - "How Long, O Lord": Notes in Transition

"How long, O Lord" is a cry of lament uttered by the psalmist and prophets of the Hebrew Bible. Maybe you've felt the words come to your mouth in the wake of the weekend's back-to-back massacres. To the suggestion that it was unseemly to talk so soon about taking action in the political arena, I could only respond that it's hard not to react when such mass shootings take place so often, too close together to allow a cooling period, too soon for shed blood to dry before the next such tragedy.

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) through its General Assembly has urged congregations to consider the problem of gun violence in our communities and to address that problem (see the adopted study, "Gun Violence, Gospel Values: Mobilizing in Response to God's Call," at this linkOur church has urged the passage of laws that would threaten neither the second amendment nor individual gun ownership for self-defense or hunting but would restrict ownership of military-grade automatic weapons and regulate trade in weapons, taking means to prevent access to weapons by persons who might be a danger to others or to themselves. Meanwhile, we seek to be of support to those who survive gun violence and to those who grieve the murders of those lost. We pray for them, we pray for those inclined to violence, and we pray for those who have the power to make laws. Contact your senators and representatives. Pray for the peace of our communities - and work for it.

Grace and peace,

Steve Scott

Opportunities to Serve in Mission Continue on Carolina Coast

What would happen to your home if 40 inches of rain fell on it in 3 days?  Many people in Coastal Carolina Presbytery found out last fall during Hurricane Florence.  Water falling from above and rising from below put many people out of their homes, and many remain displaced, particularly in Pender County in southeast NC.

Working through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington continues to offer housing for volunteer groups to help repair and rebuild these homes.  Our facility has 8 individual air-conditioned rooms with cots topped by 4-inch foam mattresses. We can accommodate groups of up to 25 volunteers. Volunteers with construction skills are especially needed, but anyone with a good back and a loving heart is valuable, too.

We have some wonderful fall and winter dates open, and our work partner (NC Baptists on Mission) has a one-year waiting list of homes needing repair.  For more details contact Allison Cockrill at the link below. To schedule a trip, contact Eden Carroll at the link below. Thank you!

Concert Opportunity at Franklin Church

Franklin Presbyterian Church, in Salisbury, invites the Salem Presbytery family to join them to hear Reggie Saddler & Family Band in concert on Sunday, August 18, at 5:00 p.m., with a meal following the concert. Reggie Saddler is the former guitarist with Frankie Vallie; he traveled worldwide with the Bill Gaither Family. A love offering will be received. The church is located at 280 Franklin Church Drive, Salisbury. For more information call 704-633-2292.
Salem Online Resources

Have you acquainted yourself with our online directory? Please take advantage of this handy resource, to which you have access through the Salem Presbytery website. As our staff grows smaller, and as fewer are available to answer the phone, you will find this directory easier to use (password = clemmons3950) than calling the presbytery to get phone numbers and email addresses of committee members or others you want to be in touch with.
