Historical Tidbit:
Early Excursion To Plymouth
When the Old Colony Railroad was first open for business one of their first trips was a run to Plymouth. About 400 gentlemen were invited by the directors to assemble at South Station at 10 o'clock in the morning at the freight depot of the company as the bridge over which the train would have had to pass to the passenger depot in the city had not been finished. A train of beautiful cars, built by a Mr. Bradley of Worcester were waiting to receive those invited for the trip.
The cars were handsomely finished with all the material improvements. The train was drawn by two new engines and proceeded at a moderate pace, stopping at all the way stations to take in the gentlemen who had been invited to join in the excursion.
The route passed through Dorchester, on the sea coast border, crossed the Neponset River near its mouth, passed through the Weymouth Center, South Abington, a portion of Hanson, a corner of Halifax and the village of Kingston to its terminus near Court Street in Plymouth, a distance of 37 miles.
The route as far as Quincy and Braintree was pleasant, but from the latter point on, uninteresting. The track, with the exception of a small portion, where the work was not finished was in excellent order. The depot buildings at the way stations were not yet finished.
The train arrived in Plymouth between 12 o'clock and 1 PM. From the depot the guest marched in procession, with music, to Pilgrim Hall where after a brief address they enjoyed a chowder luncheon. After brief speeches all guests were returned to the city in the early evening.
This was the seventh main line of the railroad that radiated from Boston as a common center, measuring in all their branches more than 800 miles, and it was said that the lines were to soon be extended.
An eyewitness account of that trip by one of the gentlemen years later told of the odd looking train struggling with a grade. "Going up a grade from what is now Quincy Adams, at that time Braintree, the locomotive was unable to pull the train, and some of us were obliged to get out and push the engine and train up the slope. First we detached the engine and pushed that up the grade, then we took the cars and gave them a lift up the hard place, and that was the way in which we helped along the first trip over the new railroad."
"We went along all right then, as I remember, until we came to Kingston, four miles from Plymouth, and here we found that the bridge was not completed. The engineer did not dare to run the cars over the road, heavily loaded as they were and so we got out again, some extra boards were laid down, and we walked over the bridge, single file..."
The Old Colony Rail Road Boston to Plymouth line opened November 10,1845 - 36.8 miles in length.
~Respectfully submitted, Sue Basile

Thank You Action Team
Halifax Police Department would like to thank Laicey Ieronimo of The Action Team for dropping off “care bags” for children that we potentially come in contact with during the course of our duties and need to be transported to the PD to await services. These bags will make the already scary and traumatizing wait time more bearable for these children. Great work Laicey and thank you to all the residents who donated items.

A BuzzAround shout out to Halifax writer Donna Latvis.
Donna emailed us with this update: "I am 62... I raised 2 daughters by myself and now am a proud grandmother of 3.
I have loved writing and photography since my early teens.
In 2005 my first book of poetry was released "Gifts From God". Then in 2006 "Defend God's Word" was released. In this book I share what the Bible has taught me about subjects like Faith and Salvation. I have 20 each left from their printing. "

“Just because you take breaks doesn’t mean you’re broken.”

When you rest, you catch your breath and it holds you up, like water wings…”
~ Anne Lamott
“If you get tired, learn to rest, not to quit.”
~ Bansky
"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time."
~ John Lubbock
"I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,

which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?"
