Dancing with Nature

January 2019 Issue 1 Vol 9
News, Life and the Art Culture in the Smoky Mountains

Photo from Smoky Mountain Living. Donated Photo

During an intensely busy December I read a quote that January was a time to Rest. Renew. Regroup. In my mind, I said, "YES! This is just what I need. I cannot wait!" Well, January arrived. We have barreled through inventory at a record pace and now need to prepare for a string of events coming up, along with a long list of the gallery's to do's. The announcement of a snow day brings fantasies of a day of rest and regrouping ..... but I am always tempted to open, JUST in case. I did step down from being Waynesville Gallery Association president after NINE years ..... part of my 3 R's strategy, so I am making progress!

It is a new year bringing with it changes, retirements and new beginnings, which seems to be the underlying theme of Downtown Waynesville this month.  As the photo above depicts, Waynesville is use to change and is revitalized by the process.  The upcoming turnover is mind boggling but here we go:
  • Beautiful Techniques (formerly Gate Keepers) ~ closed
  • Mainstreet Mercantile ~ closing, to be filled with Just Simply Delicious
  • Eli and JoJo's, a Brooklyn Italian restaurant, opening soon in the formerly Trailhead space
  • Tia Dana moving out; something coming in
  • John Laughter Jewelry ~ retiring (do not know who is in)
  • Antiks ~ retiring (do not know who is in)
  • Mountain Favors ~ moved out to restructure their business; I do not know who will move into their spot (the stone building).  Good luck, Amy (and Art by Molly)!
Not downtown but Publix, Starbucks and Shoney's are all posed to open soon. Change can sometimes be difficult but come springtime Waynesville will be renewed!

The HUGEST change is happening right here at Twigs and Leaves Gallery. Our Becky is leaving after five years of smiles, enthusiasm, and diligent, hard work. She wants to be able to dedicate more of her time to her je welry, stepping up her jewelry show schedule. Becky w ill be missed by her gallery team members and by many custo mers that have embraced her local charm. As my right hand (both feet and brain), Becky's presence has given me s ome freedom that I will miss, but mostly I will jus t miss having her around. We all wish her a sparkling journey with this new chapter.

Waynesville Gallery Association is not resting this winter as we host three events Winter Arts Smokies Style, co-sponsored by Downtown Waynesville Association and supported by the Tourist Development Authority, happening on Saturdays with gallery events 3-6(like Art After Dark). First off is coming up Saturday, January 19th, "It's "Chili" Outside", which includes a chili cook-off between merchants and restaurants. Colleen Davis of The Jeweler's Workbench has done an amazing job pulling this together. Check out information below. This event will be followed by February 16th's "HeART Warming ~ The Art of Chocolate" and March 16th's "Luck o
f the Art". Squeezed in there, as part of Love the Locals, on February 9th, Margaret Roberts will be in the gallery 1-5PM to help you make a Valentine for your Sweetheart.  Mark you calendar for these!

Somewhere in there I vow to Rest. Renew. Re group. embracing the peaceful quiet of winter, allo win g life to slow down just a little. I hope that you will do the same.
