The 2023 Severn River Report Card is out--see the report in the next section for the good news. Thank you to University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science for your assistance with data analysis.
We are still buzzing around here about the recently published Severn River Action Plan (SRAP). This two-year effort, funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, lays out a clear, long-term path to improve the Severn River watershed. The SRAP helps us assess and prioritize subwatersheds, guiding our on-the-ground restoration efforts and tracking their impact. We’re thrilled to start with our #1 priority subwatershed, Weems Creek. The SRAP has identified 23 project opportunities, and SRA is pursuing many of these in collaboration with property owners and funders that can significantly impact the watershed.
As the weather cools, we’re focused on securing funding for new projects. Right now we are busy writing grant proposals to support an array of exciting projects from stormwater bioretention cells to living shorelines to oyster restoration and eco-tourism.
We are working hard at SRA, but it takes a village to restore a river, and you can help too! Small actions on your own property, such as installing a rain barrel or creating a rain garden, can slow stormwater runoff and improve the river’s health. Not sure where to start? Reach out if you’re interested—we’d love to discuss ways you can make a difference in your watershed.
With gratitude,
