RESTORATIVE YOGA AT HOME
To an observer, Restorative Yoga might look like a fancy nap. It is still, quiet, comfortable, and restful. But in reality, a Restorative Yoga practice is vital to balancing your body and mind. The poses and time spent in deep relaxation allow your body to rest, rejuvenate, and reconnect to a sense of calm. To practice Restorative Yoga, you don't need a lot of props - you can use what you already have around the house: 2 couch/throw pillows, 1 regular pillow, 1 blanket, and a sofa or bed. Set aside 10 to 30 minutes at least once a week to rest deeply with these Restorative Yoga postures:
-
Reclined Butterfly Pose (Supta Baddha Konasana): Place your regular pillow vertically toward the top of your mat with your blanket on top. Place your two couch pillows on either side of the middle of your mat. Lie back along your pillow and blanket and extend your legs long. Bring the soles of your feet together with knees out wide, creating a diamond shape. Let your knees rest on the couch pillows and extend your arms out wide. Settle and sink into the cushions and floor. Breathe and be still.
-
Supported Reclined Twist (Supta Matsyendrasana): Keep your pillow in the same position under your back. Place a couch pillow or blanket between your knees. Bend your knees and bring your right hip to the end of your pillow. Drop your knees to the right and extend your left arm long. You can look in either direction and allow your right arm to rest in a comfortable position. If needed, rest your knees on a couch cushion for support. Breathe and be still. After a few minutes, switch to the other side.
-
Legs Up the Wall: Have your regular pillow or blanket close to use under your head/neck if desired. On your back, slide yourself up against a sofa, bed or wall. Your legs will be up the wall or bent over the bed/sofa. Use the pillow under your head for comfort. Rest and be still.
-
Corpse Pose (Savasana): Place the folded blanket under your head, the couch pillows under your knees, and regular pillow under your heels. Relax and let go, sinking into the floor and your props.
