On Friday, January 18, St. Louis REALTORS
Foundation held a ceremony to re-dedicate the
National Historic Landmark Shelley House
commemorative plaque that was stolen from the property early last year. In addition to replacing the plaque, St. Louis REALTORS
Foundation contributed $25,000 to Rebuilding Together St. Louis for maintenance renovations. Also, at the event were representatives from Northside Community Housing and Rebuilding Together St. Louis, Congressman Wm. Lacy Clay, St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson and St. Louis Alderman Sam Moore.
The Shelley House is a historic house at 4600 Labadie Avenue in the Greater Ville St. Louis neighborhood. Built in 1906, the property was the focus of the 1948 United States Supreme Court case Shelley v. Kraemer, which ruled that judicial enforcement by state courts of racially restrictive covenants violated the Constitution. The house was designated a National Historic Landmark on December 14, 1990.
