Last week's survey results...
Do you ever say no thanks to someone wanting to give you a very small order?
  • I never say no. You never know what it will lead to. 
  • The small job I take today has lead to bigger jobs in the future many times. If I had not taken the small job they may well have gone on to the next supplier and then when the big job comes up it would go to them as well. I also find that often the small job is a test before offering the big job.
  • Some Orders simply cost more to produce than they sell for. We do offer min charge but often the small order is not prepared to pay for that. (Ben, 1800 For Promo)
  • We have found that if we view all our small jobs as the same customer, They end up being one of the top ten customers each year. So we try and do every job we can big or small. Some of the smallest jobs have turned into some of our best clients. (Horizon Signs)
  • Never - but I do say no to people who want me to make no money on a job.
  • We have a minimum cost so we do any size of order if the customer is willing to pay the minimum cost of $60.00.
  • No it is just a min job charge of $125+gst. (Wesley, Forma Sign)
  • Minimum order value of $nnn means you are well paid for 1 off's. Set your own min value, problem solved, time wasters gone. Waive it for exceptional regular customers if need to provide a special service. (Max, Metal Sign & Label)
  • NO, the little jobs are just as important to that customer as a large job is to another. It's surprising how many of the customers that get small job done, come back later with a bigger order. (Lance, Grafton SignArt)
  • If the client's job takes 5mins (including working out what they want), they have cash or payment ready and don't expect all your time, small jobs can be very profitable - especially a lot of them done at once. BUT, a new client with no prospect of more work later on is a risk. Sometimes a $20 job can cost you $80. Example: $40 worth of wages talking about the order, what they want and can't have, $20 to do the actual job, $20 accounts wages and follow up calls because they "forgot" to bring money/credit card. Then they tell all their "$20 hassle-job buddies" and it happens over again! (Been there, done that.) Sometimes no thanks is the better option.
  • Yes, that does happen from time to time but my position is a little different to the run of the mill sign business. I live rural and don't have any equipment any more so l buy in my graphics. So sometimes it is just not viable to take on some small jobs. (James, Indisignwise)
  • No. Since we are hidden away in a back street, if someone rocks up wanting to have 2 A4 prints we do it without loading the price. I take the attitude that they may come back with a big order later on. Mostly they don't, but we have had a few wins. They are also more likely to recommend us to others if they found us co-operative.

Smile: It's only Monday!

A cop stops a car for traveling faster than the posted speed limit. Since he's in a good mood that day he decides he might give the fellow a break and write him out a warning instead of a ticket.   
So, he asks the man his name. 
"Fred," the driver replies. 
"Fred what?" the officer asks. 
"Just Fred," the man responds. 
When the officer presses him for a last name, the man tells him that he used to have a last name but lost it. 
The officer thinks he has a nut case on his hands but plays along with it. 
"Tell me Fred, how did you lose your last name?" 
The man replies, "It's a long story so stay with me. I was born Fred Dingaling. I know, funny last name. The kids used to tease me all the time. So I stayed to myself. I studied hard and got good grades." 
"When I got older I realised that I wanted to be a doctor. I went through college medical school, internship, residency, finally got my degree so I was Fred Dingaling, MD." 
"After a while I got bored being a doctor so I decided to go back to school. Dentistry was my dream. Got all the way through school, got my degree so I was now Fred Dingaling, MD, DDS." 
"Got bored doing dentistry so I started fooling around with my assistant. She gave me VD. So, I was Fred Dingaling, MD, DDS with VD." 
"Well, the ADA found out about the VD so they took away my DDS so I was Fred Dingaling MD with VD." 
"Then the AMA found out about the ADA taking away my DDS because of the VD, so they took away my MD leaving me as Fred Dingaling with VD." 
Then the VD took away my dingaling . . . so now I'm just Fred."
