Notes from Elaine Park's presentation.
THE GAZE OF GOD
God saw how good it was…
Almost as a mantra or musical repetition
God’s gaze on all of creation is deeply relational, delighting in the goodness of each element. Seeing implies knowing, understanding, caring about…
The wild animals of the forest are mine,
and the cattle on a thousand hills.
I know all the birds of the air,
and all that moves in the fields is mine. (Psalm 50-10-11)
The LORD said to Moses,
“ I have indeed seen the abuse of my people that is in Egypt and its outcry because of its taskmasters. I have heard, for I know its pain. And I have come down to rescue it from the hand of Egypt and to bring it up from that land to a goodly and spacious land…
( Ex 3: 7-8)
THE GAZE OF JESUS
The gaze of Jesus is an invitation to relationship, discipleship.
Some disciples of John the Baptist were approaching Jesus.
Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, ‘What do you seek? When they ask Jesus where he lives, he says, “Come and you will see.” (John 1:38)
Jesus saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. “Follow me, he told him.” (Matthew 9:9) Pope Francis comments on this passage, saying, “Everything begins with the gaze of Jesus.”
The gaze of Jesus also brings about healing:
Luke 7: 36-50: We are invited into the scene: behold…
The gaze of Jesus extends to all creation.
HUMAN GAZING
Cure of blindness: Bartimaeus: Mark 10:46-52
Parable of seeing and not-seeing: The Good Samaritan: Luke 10: 25-37
A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the other side…. But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion.
THE COMPASSION OF GOD
You, O LORD, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, slow to anger, and bountiful in love and truth. (Psalm 86: 15; cf.Ps 103: 8, 145:8) )
Compassion (rahamim) : related to the word “womb”
“is completely gratuitous, not merited…and generates a whole range of feelings, including goodness and tenderness, patience and understanding, that is, readiness to forgive.” (Pope John Paul, Dives in Miserecordia);
“womb love“ (Dianne Bergant)
Love (hesed): translated various ways: loving-kindness, steadfast love, mercy, goodness. Translators “cannot seem to land on a single word… Let us embrace all of the above. Their swirl ushers our minds and hearts toward a love beyond all telling.”
(Elizabeth Johnson, Come, Have Breakfast, 36)
THE COMPASSION OF JESUS
Moved with compassion (splanchnizomai), Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, “I will’ be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. (Mark 1: 41-42)
HUMAN COMPASSION
Be compassionate as your Father is compassionate. (Luke 6: 35)
Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness and patience, forbearing one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. (Col 3:12-13)
Where do we, YOU, see human compassion?
Blessed by the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and God of all encouragement. (2 Cor 1:3)
