Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost
August 20, 2017

"We invite everyone to share communion around God's altar.
We strive to be a welcoming and relevant Christian community doing what matters through prayer, worship, teaching, outreach, fellowship, and service.

We will demonstrate the real life application of scripture, tradition, and
reason by providing a safe place to respond to each other's needs,
hurts, joys, and interests."

Women's Bible Study TONIGHT
Thursday, August 17, at 6:00 p.m.

The Women's Bible Study group is reading Mark Buchanan's  Spiritual Rhythm: Being With Jesus Every Season of Your Soul .

The group plans to meet the second Thursday of each month; however, that is subject to change based on participants' schedules.  The August 17th meeting will be at Resurrection at 6:00 p.m.

Please join us for this rewarding time together and bring your friends!  If you have any questions, please contact  Tera Johnston.

GOOD NEWS!!!
Refugee Family Coming to America

The Burmese family originally scheduled to arrive last month has been cleared to enter the United States. They are scheduled to arrive in Atlanta on 8/23 or 8/24. The family consists of 8 people (4 adults and 4 children). None of them speak English, and the adults cannot read nor write in their native language.  I do not know if we will be able to meet the family.

Resurrection has taken the lead in providing ALL of the items needed to furnish an apartment World Relief has rented for the family in the Clarkston/Stone Mountain area.

World Relief has requested that we, along with volunteers from Nacoochee Presbyterian and Grace-Calvary,  assist in setting up the apartment on Wednesday, August 23rd.

If you are available and would like to assist in setting up the apartment, please let me know.  It is not just moving furniture, so regardless of any physical limitations, there is something everyone can contribute (e.g., putting dishes in cabinets, making beds, providing moral support).

The current plan is to meet at Satchel Storage on Duncan Bridge Rd. at 8:30 a.m. on 8/23 and carpool to World Relief headquarters in Stone Mountain.  Once their staff checks to make sure we have all of the required items, we will travel to the apartment and get started.  It generally takes about two hours to set up the apartment with at least 7 volunteers.  Afterwards, we will eat lunch and return home.  We should be back by 3:30 pm.

On another note, August is the official donation drive for furniture and household items for World Relief.  Donations have slowed, so please remind people and encourage them to donate.

I will forward information about additional opportunities to volunteer as they arise.

Love and Peace.
Jan Kay
Guest Preacher This Sunday!
Easton Davis -
Missioner for Youth & Young Adult Ministry in the Diocese of Atlanta

Easton Davis will be our guest preacher at the 8:15 & 10:30 services. Easton is on the Bishop's staff as the Missioner for Youth & Young Adult Ministries. Also, Resurrection's vestry will meet Sunday after the 10:30 service with Easton, Sandy Bergin, and Denise Dorsey about restarting our children and youth ministry.

Easton Davis   is a Georgia native who has been working in youth ministry for the past 4 years. He graduated with Honors from the University of North Georgia.  Easton joined the Bishop's staff in January of 2015 as Missioner for Youth Ministries. He serves as a resource for all youth programs in the Diocese of Atlanta, especially those in smaller parishes.  Easton visits and consults with parishes, convocations, and university campuses to assist in developing youth and young adult programs.
New Christian Formation Offering
Using Skye Jethani's book What's Wrong With Religion? (not a prerequisite to purchase or read along) as a  clear, lucid, accessible guide to barriers that obstruct people's faith, we will be exploring common thoughts on what's wrong with religion and what's right with faith. Whatever your convictions about religion might be, if you are interested in ultimate questions, come at 9:30 a.m. on the following dates:

9/10: Everyone is Religious
9/17: How Religion Ruins the World
9/24: Getting Rid of Religion Doesn't Help
10/8: God Doesn't Exist To Be Used
10/15: ...& Neither Do You
10/22: THE SOLUTION: Living WITH God
10/29: The "Radical" Life Isn't What You Think
11/12: The World Is A Perfectly Safe Place (Really)
11/19: All You Need Is Love

If you have any questions, please contact Joe Cash.

ONLY 2 SPOTS LEFT! I will be offering a new class beginning this fall called ACTS (Adult Christian Theological Study). The group will meet once a week for approximately 90 minutes (day and time yet to be determined) for the school calendar year, taking the same days and weeks off as the school calendar. This group will do an in-depth exploration of the Old & New Testaments, Church History, and Theology, coupled with an intimate small group supportive learning environment. This course will complete in three years, but participants are only asked to commit to one program year at a time.

The only costs will be for the text books, which will total less than $100 for all three years. There will be a weekend retreat in the fall or spring of the program year.

I hope that the outcome of this group will be to properly theologically educate individuals who can think theologically about today's challenges of loving God and neighbor.

The group is filling up, but I have two spots left.  The only requirements are that you seek Christian maturity, have an open mind for inquisitive learning, an open heart for mutual group peer support, and a willingness to regularly attend the agreed-upon meetings.

If you are interested in this new offering, please reply to me, frscott@windstream.net.
The 2017 Women's Retreat will be held at Camp Mikell October 20-22. The cost is $175, which includes all food, lodging and supplies.
The Very Reverend Mary Demmler has agreed to join us again to share some thoughtful and humorous stories and ideas.  There will be a sign-up sheet in the Narthex beginning this Sunday.  If you have any questions, please contact Linda Perry.

Bring your friends, sisters & daughters too and prepare to be blessed!

World Relief Refugee Resettlement Program

Resurrection has formed a partnership with Nacoochee Presbyterian  Church and Grace-Calvary Episcopal Church  to gather items that are needed  by World Relief to  help settle refugee families in the Metro Atlanta area. During the month of August, the three churches will be soliciting donations for the World Relief Refugee Resettlement Program. A storage space will be rented to store the donated items until they can be transported to the World Relief warehouse. A list of needed items has been posted on the bulletin board in the hallway to the left of the narthex. Please take a copy with you.

After church each Sunday in August, a volunteer will be onsite at each church from 12:00 until 1:30 to accept donations of new and gently used household items and small items of furniture (e.g., lamps, dining room chairs). You can drop off donated items at any of the three churches.

On Saturday August 12th and 26th, between 10:00 and 2:00, volunteers will be at the storage facility (location TBD) to collect larger items. Smaller furniture items and household goods will also be accepted on these dates. If possible, please bring donated furniture on these dates. If you cannot transport the furniture or household items yourself, contact Jan Kay at (770) 371-4570 or jmkay24@gmail.com, and arrangements will be made to have a volunteer pick up the items. We are seeking volunteers for this endeavor, so please let Jan Kay know if you can assist. We will definitely need some help on August 12th and 26th.

 Schedule for August:
August 22 - La Cabana
August 29 - Corner Grill
Are you ready for Boundless Love?

Crosses Needed
We are collecting crosses to make an arrangement in the parish hall.  The ones in this picture were made by Harold Riley using some of the wood out of Morris Braswell's shop.  If you would like to donate a cross to be used in the arrangement, please bring it to church and put it on the table in the parish hall.  We would like a variety of sizes and an assortment of materials; they do not have to be made of wood.  If you have any questions, please contact Denise Dorsey at 706-969-0514 or
