๐ Week 3: The Laundry Room

๐ Direct Links Inside! ๐

The New Tide Evo Is Not What You Think
We applaud the cardboard box. That part is real: FSC paperboard, no jug, no liner, no wrapper.
But the tile inside carries 24 ingredients. Fifteen are made in a lab, and most of those begin as petroleum. Only five are plain minerals.
One of them is PVA. That is plastic. It did not leave the product. It moved out of the bottle and into the detergent.
๐ Our picks are below.
Hippiekit recommends products with 90% Or More Plant-Based, Non-Chemical Ingredients that come in Sustainable Packaging like cardboard, glass or aluminum. We tell you exactly what is in them, including the parts that are not perfect. This week we are in the laundry room, the one room where almost nothing gets thrown away. It all leaves dissolved in water, which makes August, National Water Quality Month, the right time for it.

๐งผ In the Machine: What You Pour In
๐ A Word About Pods And Sheets
Laundry pods and dissolving detergent sheets are held together with PVA, a plastic film. It dissolves, which is not the same thing as disappearing, and whether it fully breaks down in wastewater treatment is genuinely disputed. Here is the honest ladder, best to worst: powder in a paper box, then a pressed tablet with no film, then a PVA pod, then liquid in a plastic jug. Everything below sits on the top two rungs.

๐ OUR TOP PICK ๐
Washing Soda + Borax + Oxygen Bleach
โค๏ธ I switched because of a bra. I had been washing with a plant-based detergent and my whites had gone gray in that way you stop noticing. Then a chef I was working with on a yacht did my laundry using these three powders and nothing else. It came back looking new. One wash.
Three mineral powders. Three ingredients in total: sodium carbonate, sodium tetraborate, sodium percarbonate. That is the entire list. Use them together as your everyday wash, or as a booster alongside any detergent below.
โ ๏ธ Straight talk: this combination is superb on whites, brightening and everyday grime. It is not a degreaser. For motor oil or heavy grease, pair it with one of the detergents below.
Powder in a paper box, so there is no film, no jug, and no plastic anywhere in the system. MADE SAFE certified, unscented, and 128 HE loads per box. Meliora also wrote the piece the whole industry cites on why PVA is plastic, which tells you where they stand.
A concentrated plant-based powder that ships without water weight, which is most of what you pay to haul home in a jug. Paper packaging, no film, and no petroleum-derived surfactants heading for the drain.
A mineral-based powder in a steel tin you keep and refill. A short ingredient list with no enzymes, no optical brighteners, no fragrance, and nothing that needs a plastic wrapper to hold it together.
A pressed tablet with no film at all, which is the entire point. Blueland has been the loudest voice calling out PVA in pods, and their own product backs the argument up. Refill a tin you already own.

๐ช In the Dryer
Wool balls replace dryer sheets entirely. They separate clothes so air can move, cut drying time, and last for years instead of one load. Add a few drops of pure lavender oil to a ball and the scent comes from an actual plant. Worth knowing: fresh linen is not a real smell. It is a synthetic fragrance accord invented in a lab. Linen has no scent of its own.
If you want a sheet, this is the one. Conventional dryer sheets are a woven polyester scrim, which is a sheet of plastic fabric you bin every single load. These are plant-based cellulose with plant-derived softeners instead. Straight talk: the softening agent is still a processed esterquat, so wool balls remain the cleaner choice.
The same idea on a rayon wood-pulp base, roughly 97 percent plant-based, scented with essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance. No petroleum-derived softeners and no plastic sheet left over.
๐ What You Are Actually Washing
โ ๏ธ The Part Nobody Mentions
Your washing machine is the largest source of microplastic in most homes, and it is not the detergent. It is the clothes. Every polyester shirt, fleece, sock and sheet sheds plastic fiber every single cycle, straight out the drain. Natural fiber is the only version of this that does not. One brand per category below, so you can start wherever your drawer needs it most.
Most bath towels sold today are a cotton and polyester blend, and the polyester half sheds every wash while making the towel less absorbent. These are organic cotton throughout, so they get softer with age instead of shedding.
Microfiber sheets are polyester, which is why they cost so little and shed so much. You sleep on them for eight hours and then wash the fibers into the water. Linen is flax, it breathes, and it lasts for decades rather than seasons.
Socks are almost always where the hidden polyester lives, even in drawers that are otherwise cotton. These are 100 percent organic cotton, which means the load you wash most often stops being a plastic load.
Conventional underwear is usually polyester or nylon with an elastane blend, shedding petroleum plastic against your skin and into the wash. Pact is organic cotton and independently PFAS-free, which matters given what testing has found in this category.
Activewear is the worst offender in the entire wardrobe. Polyester and nylon leggings shed heavily, and they get washed after nearly every wear. Organic cotton leggings break that cycle without giving up the stretch.

๐ฌ Skip the Machine Entirely
A dryer lasts around eleven years. This is furniture. Solid maple, no plastic, no coated wire. Line drying also skips the heat that breaks fibers down, so clothes shed less and last longer. The gentlest wash cycle in the house is the one that never runs.
๐ซ Out of the Plastic Basket
A plastic hamper cracks, yellows in sunlight, and sheds tiny fragments the whole time it sits there. Cotton rope with wooden handles folds flat, washes, and does not turn brittle.
Handwoven cotton baskets that are machine washable, which no plastic bin can claim. Good for laundry, better for the corner of a room where a plastic tub used to live.
A woven hamper that breathes, so damp towels dry instead of souring. Natural fiber throughout and built to be seen rather than hidden in a closet.

| ๐ข APP UPDATE ๐ข |
Is My Hippiekit Microplastic Finder App Acting Up?
It is having some glitches, and we would rather say so. Scans are taking a couple of minutes at the moment, and every so often a product comes back with nothing when we know perfectly well what is in it. Please keep using it. It does work, it is just slower than it should be, and the fix is already underway.
And if you are in a hurry, the website has all of it and it is quick. Search any product by name, or browse by room and category. Every swap in this email, and hundreds more, are already waiting there.
Still want the app? Search โHippiekitโ in the App Store or Google Play, or scan this code. It is worth having, and the update will reach you automatically when it lands. |
We would rather tell you than let you wonder.

๐ That is a wrap on National Water Quality Month. Three rooms, one drain at a time: the kitchen sink, the bathroom, and now the laundry room. Thank you for coming along.
๐ One Quick Heads Up. Next Monday is Labor Day, and a great many paper plates, plastic forks and plastic cups are about to be used once and thrown away. There are plant-based versions of every one of them. If you are hosting, stock up here instead.
๐ซ And Next Week We Start Something New. September 7 is also the first day of Zero Waste Week, so we are turning the series around. Water Quality Month was about what leaves your home dissolved in water. Next month is about what leaves it in a bag, and where that bag actually ends up.
