Rethinking Summer Reading

The Summer Reading Program, designed to promote literacy and education, can be a source of stress, sometimes significant stress, for library workers. How can we ensure this program makes a meaningful impact on our communities without burning oursevles out? Join your peers on April 25th at the Mid-Hudson Library System (MHLS) Auditorium (105, Market Street, Poughkeepsie) from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm for the Rethinking Summer Reading workshop.

Presented by Millbrook Library Director, Courtney Tsahalis, this presentation will provide an overview of summer reading research and trends and help library staff re-focus on how to set kids up for future success using real-world examples. There will be a discussion session for participants following the presentation.

This event is open to all MHLS member library staff who plan, program, or promote their library’s Summer Reading Program. Registration is required.

This program spans April 2024 to September 2025. This cohort is open to all MHLS member library staff who plan, program, or promote their library’s Summer Reading Program. Multiple staff members from an individual library are welcome to attend as a team. This cohort has a limit of 10 total libraries participating. Applications due March 29th.

MHLS Libraries

The Phoenicia Library hosted an epic Second Grade Award Ceremony! Ms. Mitchell’s 13 scholars presented book reports on their favorite chapter books at the library. Librarian Susan Penick then bestowed a medal and congratulations to each student. These reports will be on display at the library along with the books they love for the next month.

Professional Development

The New York Library Association (NYLA) Developing Leaders Program is working to “build the bridge” between people in different job roles at public libraries across New York State. They are requesting that library leaders help them learn more about “who does what” at your libraries by filling out this survey. Deadline to participate in the survey is Monday, April 15th.

Resource Sharing & Sierra

As of April 15th, 2024, all OverDrive websites and apps, (including Libby and Kanopy) will no longer be supported on devices running Android operating systems 7.1.0 and earlier. OverDrive's web certificate provider must implement this change to ensure security and privacy for users. OverDrive predicts that approximately 1.5% of OverDrive users will be impacted.

Beginning March 25th, affected Libby users will see a message in the app prompting them to update their OS or switch to a supported device to continue using the app. This message will instruct users on transferring their account, including cards, loans, holds, and tags to another device. After April 15th, any users still running Android OS 7.1.0 or earlier will no longer be able to use OverDrive services until they update to Android 7.1.1 or later or switch to a supported device.

Sustainable Libraries

The American Library Association (ALA) and Sustainable Libraries Initiative (SLI) have partnered to create a National Climate Action Strategy for U.S. Libraries. In order to inform this strategy and expedite the implementation of the strategy in libraries, ALA and SLI are seeking feedback from the field. The results will inform the implementation section of the strategy document which is scheduled to be released in June 2024 at the ALA Annual Conference in San Diego, CA.

This survey is intended for library leaders. The Working Group identifies library leaders as all library workers and trustees given each person’s sphere of influence to make a difference on the topic of climate action.

The survey should take 8-10 minutes to complete. It will remain open until Friday, April 5, 2024. Instructions are provided at the end of the survey on how to enter the drawing for one of two National Parks Annual Passes provided by the ALA Sustainability Round Table.
