HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT TAXES, ROLLOVERS, MINIMUM REQUIRED DISTRIBUTIONS, ESTATE PLANNING, OR TAX-FREE GIFT LIMITS?
Over 50 people are already registered for EPIC’s Retirement Finances Session this Friday. If you have specific questions, please email them to epic@columbia.edu. Your questions will be anonymous, so feel free to ask anything on your mind.
Tamara Telesko, Director of Wealth Planning at TIAA, will lead a discussion on retirement planning, tax considerations, and effective estate planning strategies. We’ll cover important topics, including recent regulatory changes affecting “catch-up” contributions to retirement plans, new rules for Minimum Required Distributions (MRDs), and impending limits on prescription drug co-payments, among other critical updates for prospective retirees.

NEW PROGRAM
EPIC’s Second Monday Club
| | |
Monday, November 11, 12:30 pm
EPIC’s Office, 202A Philosophy Hall
| | | |
Beginning on Monday, November 11, EPIC will host an informal lunch conversation group meeting in 202A Philosophy Hall on the Morningside campus on the second Monday of each month. Each person is asked to bring lunch and join fellow EPICureans from 12:30–2:00 pm for conversation and fellowship.
At the first meeting, the group is invited to discuss what they might want from such a gathering. It could become a book club, a current events discussion group, or have a different focus each time; it might even turn into a documentary film club, or simply remain a casual, drop-in lunch group. We encourage people to come ready to share their thoughts on what they'd like this group to be at the November 11 meeting.
Please “register” by Friday, November 8, so that we know there will be enough participants to make it viable. We'll experiment with this for a few months to see how it evolves.

DOUGLAS CHALMERS GRADUATE SCHOLARS LECTURESHIP
| | |
Political Theory Within and Without Political Science
November 14 at 5 pm
Lindsay Rogers Room, 707 International Affairs Building
and via Zoom
Lecture will be followed by a cocktail reception.
| | | |
The field of political science is frequently shaped by a schism between political theory and the broader discipline. In this lecture, Nathan Feldman asks how, when, and why this rupture emerged. Discussing new archival findings, he shows how, between the 1940s and 1970s, a cadre of leading political theorists identified their vocation with humanism, presenting it as eternally opposed to practices of “positivists” and “methodists.” This lecture recounts how political theory went its own way and the consequences of it doing so.
Nathan Feldman is a Core Lecturer in Contemporary Civilization in the Department of Political Science at Columbia University. He received his PhD in Political Science from Columbia in June 2024. His first book, A Liberal Science, will be a genealogy of political theory as a subfield of Anglophone political science.

IMPORTANT DEADLINES APPROACHING
EPIC members have the opportunity to audit most classes offered at the University, with some exceptions (e.g., studio art, filmmaking, instrumental instruction, undergraduate seminars, and language courses). To audit a class, members must obtain written permission from the instructor and submit the application to audit, along with a copy of the instructor’s permission, by Friday, December 13, 2024, for second-semester classes. Detailed instructions on the process can be found on the EPIC website here.
The Housing Mobility Program (HMP) provides financial support to tenants in Columbia housing who are moving out or downsizing to a smaller apartment that better suits their needs. The deadline for the next application round for 2024–2025 is Friday, November 15, 2024. For more information on potential benefits, eligibility requirements, and application materials, please refer to the program description here. If you have any questions or would like additional details after reviewing the website, feel free to contact Jo Golden, Associate Director for Administration and Planning, at jg49162@columbia.edu.
Retired officers who are eligible for the increased subsidy of $1,500 per year for supplementary health insurance (those who retired in 2012 or later) must complete their enrollment in the insurance through VIA by December 7, 2024, in order to qualify for the subsidy. Please note that in 2025, enrollment for 2026 is expected to be available only to new retirees, not those who retired between 2012 and 2024. Therefore, this is likely to be a one-time opportunity.
