RETIREMENT SECURITY MATTERS

A forum for retirement innovation information sharing

focused on states, supporters, and service providers.

Vol 91 | January 4, 2024

Greetings!  Lisa, welcome to Retirement Security Matters – where we talk about retirement readiness innovation by states, supporters, and service providers.

Happy New Year 2024, Friends! It’s with much anticipation that we have rounded the corner into this next set of months.

We joke that producing RSM is like writing the newsletter version of War and Peace every two weeks. That said, we are shifting into a new gear. Think of it as beach-bike gear. Hop on – here we go. ♥️

What's Next: an Intermission.

Viktoria Titova Massena’s Emerald Ballet Theater, 2023.

Friends, Colleagues, Readers,

After 90 editions and $1 billion stockpiled by new savers in Auto IRA programs since 2017, your favorite newsletter - Retirement Security Matters – is taking an intermission.

There there now, stop crying. 😭😭 That’s a bit dramatic, isn’t it!

The good news: yes there is still a ton going on in the space of retirement savings innovation. The other news: we are building a more flexible year here at Massena Associates, and that means a little less time tied to the typewriter.

We would be remiss if we didn't take a moment right here to thank you, our very loyal and committed readers, for all your clicking and sharing and commenting and support. You have brought us a great deal of joy, and we appreciate you. (Carlos, #1 Fan!)

We know you have questions, so what could be more fun than a little FAQ? Let’s do it!

Massena, you can’t do this! How in the world are we going to stay up to date on all things State Auto IRA.

Good news friends - as you see at the bottom of each of these newsletters, there are some wonderful folks following the news and leading the action from a retirement savings innovation perspective, including by states.

We think you will like the excellent monthly- and breaking news-letter published by Angela Antonelli and the Georgetown Center for Retirement Savings Inclusion. Georgetown CRI’s website includes a treasure trove of states’ and other relevant information.

If you want a great source of broad-based, consumer-focused retirement news, Jeffrey H. Snyder’s The Morning Pulse is your ticket. You can subscribe here.

We also love PlanSponsor Newsdash - here’s the FREE subscription link.

Fine, fine. What else have you got?

Well, y’all know we love (and work with) the Defined Contribution Institutional Investment Association (DCIIA) – which is dedicated to enhancing the retirement security of America’s workers. To do this, DCIIA fosters a dialogue among the leaders of the defined contribution community who are passionate about improving defined contribution outcomes. DCIIA's site provides a range of public and member-specific resources. Check it out.

Among others, there is some amazing work being done by our friends at Pew’s Retirement Savings Project which studies the challenges and opportunities for increasing retirement savings and is another great resource - check out the work of John Scott and his terrific team.

We also must include the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. Led by Dr. Alicia Munnell, the Center develops and hosts terrific content and proprietary research related to states, financial security, Social Security, and more.

But but, we love your sassy style and can’t live without it.

Oh really! Well then you are going to love our back issues covering the evolution of retirement savings innovation since 2020.

You can get recent issues of the newsletter here.

And cozy up with our brilliant, expert, leading-edge thought leaders here.

And don’t forget best practices – yes they evolve but there’s a lot of good meat on the bones and lasting stuff right here.

Will we see any more of RSM in 2024?

Probably. We’re not very private people. We love to talk and we love this space. So, stay tuned. But first, we’re taking a break. ☀️

That’s it for this edition. ❤ Hug your people and change the world. We mean it. Go.
