Vol. VIII, Week 10
March 5, 2018
EDITOR'S NOTE
This week we've found some great articles for you to check out.
  • If you've ever wondered about PennHip, we've found a great video that explains the process
  • If you're a quail hunter, you'll want to learn more about the parasites that can kill off these game birds and the efforts underway to combat the pests
  • If you have old armchairs at home, the best place for them might be at your local shelter
  • If you're looking for a date or a way to improve your health, the answer may already be right by your side.
And o f course, we've also included announcements of wins, new titles, National qualifications and updated rankings. You can see more on the website .

Enjoy!
IT'S IN THE JOINTS
PennHip
Most know the importance of checking the hips on a dogs we own and on the sire and dam of pups we're looking to buy. The reason? to understand the amount of joint laxity in the hip, something that can lead to osteoarthritis.

There are two "authorities" that have established standards for hips: Penn Hip and Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).

The Penn Hip approach includes three distinct views and many consider it superior to the approach used by the OFA. In addition, PennHip requires that all x-rays be submitted to ensure that the database is comprehensive, including both good and less good results.

Note: vets must be certified by the PennHip program.

You can learn more here.

Clinical Trial
Ortho-Bio is currently recruiting dogs diagnosed with hip dysplasia and/or osteoarthritis for a clinical trial. The goal of the trial is to understand the "efficacy of Transcutaneous Magnetic Stimulation to block pain."

To learn more and potentially enroll your dog in the trial, contact Ashley, the research technician at agaver@vosm.com.
BOBWHITE PARASITES
Photo: DSams/istockphoto.com and Sporting Classics Daily
The bobwhite population is challenged on a number of fronts in addition to loss of habitat. A parasitic eyeworm called Oxyspirura petrowi, similar to hookworms in dogs, can severely weaken the bird and make it vulnerable to predators. And another parasite can affect the bird's ability to absorb nutrients.

Once theses parasite become established they can wipe out colonies in a matter of weeks.

The research team led by the Wildlife Toxicology Lab at Texas Tech has developed something called an anthelmintic which can be added into a medicated feed.

Of course, more needs to be done. And the Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation needs funds to continue this research and take it to the next level.

You can learn more here. To make a donation to the Campaign for Quail, contact Phil Lamb at 214-498-1234 or plamb@quailresearch.org.
CHAIRS FOR DOGS
We all spend way too much on dog beds, which many dogs ignore in favor of sleeping in a nice cozy armchair. The Knox County Humane Society No Kill Animal Shelter in Galesburg, IL (1855 Windish Drive, Galesburgm Illinois 61401) is asking the community to donate unwanted chairs.

If you live in another part of the country, perhaps your local shelter would take chairs that would otherwise go to the dump!

You can also make a donation to the shelter here.

Donating old chairs
What to do with old chairs.
NEED A DATE? FIRST, GET A DOG
The New York Times recently published an article about how those with dogs appear to be "more approachable, happier and more empathetic." And men with dogs "can indicate that [he] is nurturing and capable of caregiving."

In a study by Match.com respondents said "they would judge their date based on how he or she responded to their own pet."

You can read the article here.
22 MINUTES WILL GIVE YOU...
The NPR website reports on a recent study published in the BMC Public Health journal that found that dog owners "walk 22 minutes more per day compared to those who didn't own a dog." Th is extra exercise contributes to cardiovascular health and lowers the risk of a number of other diseases.

Now if they just did a study on the benefits of slinging a bag of birds on your back and walking out in the field.

You can read more here.
