MEET MEGAN |
|
Doug Quast had this to share.
What began as something fun to do with her dad grew into a passion for dogs and a real flair for training and handling. In July 2016, Megan Quast, age 17 and a member of the Lake Country Retriever Club in Minnesota, successfully completed rigorous testing with her dog Chance, earning a Master Hunter.
Megan began her career as a 12-year-old, drafted by her dad to throw dummies during training sessions. That year
Megan and Chance earned a Junior Hunter title.
From there her passion for dogs and her participation in the LCRC events grew. A
t 15 she and Chance earned a Senior Hunter title.
In addition to all the training hours and time spent in competition, Megan also edited the monthly newsletter for two years, marshalled events, and photographed members as they competed, earning her the Club's volunteer of the year award in 2015.
Based on available data from the AKC, Megan is the first junior handler in the nation to complete all three levels of the hunt tests. Her next goal is to take Chance's daughter, Cali, through the Master Hunter level in 2017.
Note: The American Kennel Club (AKC) began recognition of Junior Handlers (defined as dog handlers between 9 and 18 years old) in their nationally recognized Companion and Performance events in 1999. While the majority of youth handlers participate in AKC obedience and agility tests, more and more youths are getting involved in the AKC hunt tests.
There is no distinction between judging a Junior Handler and a professional dog trainer/handler. But the dog the youth handles must be owned by them or a family member. Each junior who successfully handles a dog to a title receives a formal certificate for each title earned.
In the last three years, a total of 37 Junior Handlers have participated in the AKC Hunt tests nationally. If there's a young person in your family who wants to do more than toss dummies or birds for you, check out http://bit.ly/2i97n6P and register for a Junior Handler number. Then take the dog to the local AKC hunt test and begin your own journey.

Cleaning Your Dog's Teeth
There are many ways to help keep your dog's teeth healthy. Here's something you can do yourself. (Thanks to John Jackson for providing the video.)
Make a paste of these ingredients. Use a cotton cloth to wipe the paste on your dog's teeth.
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 2 TBS baking soda
- Several drops peppermint
Don't Drink That!
Given all the places our dogs go, there is a good chance
that at some point they'll be exposed to a disease called Leptospirosis.
There is a vaccine. And while it does not always prevent infection, it tends to reduce the severity of the disease if it's contracted.
Dogs can pick up lepto by drinking water or ingesting fluids produced by contaminated animals (e.g., domesticated pets, wild animals).
Symptoms include lethargy, poor appetite, fever, vomiting and increased thirst. If you think your dog has been exposed, see your vet right away.
The AKC has a good article on lepto; you can read more
here.
Helping Sporting Dogs Combat the Cold
Purina Pro Plan has provided some tips for keeping your pup safe this winter. The article focuses on:
- Outfitting with the proper gear
- Knowing your dog's limits
- Checking their feet
- Steering clear of frozen ponds
- Providing warm shelter
Further details can be found

Who's Healthier -- Purebreds or Mutts?
In the June 1 edition of the Journal of the American
Veterinary Medical Association, researchers from UC Davis examined the medical records of 90,000 dogs. About 30% demonstrated at least one of 24 genetic conditions.
The overall result is that mixed breeds are "nearly as susceptible as purebred dogs to 13 heritable medical conditions." And while some quarreled with the study's methodology, one of the study's authors stated "purebred dogs are more likely to have genetic diseases due to the concentration of genetic traits."
