A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS |
|
For the past few weeks we have been on an unplanned hiatus. While we'd love to blame Count Olaf (of Lemony Snicket fame) or Russian hackers, some times things just happen.
- We moved to a more robust server to keep pace with Retriever Results' double-digit growth. The vendor promised a "seamless" transition. Ha!
- We integrated a third party content delivery network (CDN) for faster page loads. The CDN was hit with a series of denial of service attacks. We switched to a new vendor.
- An automatic Windows update shut down our SQL server. Microsoft Professional Support told us we were not alone. We gave up trying to troubleshoot and "re-imaged" the server.
Even though the newsletters have been MIA, the website has been up to date.
Thanks to all of you for the flood of emails, text messages and phone calls.
We're thrilled to be back.

PAT BURNS INTERVIEWS |
|
You may have attended one of Pat's training seminars or he may have trained a dog for you. Or you may have seen some of his interviews during the National or National Amateur.
These interviews are absolutely terrific ways to gain perspective on tests held at Nationals. For example, why are dogs having a hard time now, when others didn't earlier? What is it that makes a certain test so challenging. Pat selects knowledgeable people and asks them smart questions.
He has collected the videos and you can see them here.

WOMEN TEACHING WOMEN TO TRAIN GUN DOGS |
|
 |
|
 |
Lee Lee Milner
|
Ten years or so ago, Kristie Wilder held a few women-only Retriever Retreats. Now
Lee Lee Milner, daughter of Robert Milner (of Wild Rose Kennel fame) is doing something similar by creating an organization called "Girls with Gundogs." Its motto is to "empower women through relationships with their dogs and through experiences in the outdoors."
The organization is starting with a two-day dog-training retreat staffed by women. Day one includes lessons on clicker training with a young puppy and day two will include the opportunity to work a fully trained gundog in the field.

STAINS AND SMELLS |
|
Stains
Originally formulated for vet offices, The Equalizer Stain and Odor Eliminator has a reputation for doing a great job with organic-based stains. It costs about $15 per can.
Available through most online pet sites and Amazon, you can also purchase it here.
Smells
At midnight we let the dogs out and they encountered a skunk, a first for us. Fortunately the Facebook community immediately kicked into gear and came up with these excellent suggestions.
One of the best came from Gay Fruehling who shared that "In Minnesota if
a dog gets skunked you go to a car wash and they have a place to wash your dog that includes the right soap."
Suggested magic formulas:
- Equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water, 2 rounded tablespoons of baking soda and 2 teaspoons Dawn dis detergent (Ed Aycock, Andrew Cobb, Les Levering)
- Work the hydrogen peroxide mixture into the coat to the skin and leave on 10-15 minutes before rinsing. Repeat as needed (Ed Aycock)
- AWater and vinegar, be sure to keep it out of their eyes (Claudia Muterspaugh)
- Equal parts baby shampoo, peroxide, 2 tablespoons baking soda (Lisa Kane)
- Bathe dog immediately in deer hunter's odor neutralizing soap - twice. Towel dry, blow dry, spray with deer hunters odor neutralizing spray (Thomas Imeson)
Other helpful suggestions:
- Don't rinse the dog before applying the hydrogen peroxide mixture; it won't work as well (Julie Reardon)
- Don't let them dry before you use the hydrogen peroxide mixture (Melanie Foster)
- The longer you wait to deal with it, the less effective the treatment is.
- Don't let the dogs in the house as they will roll on carpets and rub on furniture, prolonging your agony
- Use room sprays (Febreeze, Bath & Body Works)

HEALTH |
|
There have been a number of good articles published recently on issues our dogs face. Some are long, but all are worth the read if it's a topic you're interested in. Also, here is a link to current clinical trials.
Hemangiosarcoma Trial
If your dog has a biopsy-confirmed splenic HSA and suspected metastatic disease you are eligible for a trial to evaluate the clinical activity of a chemotherapeutic in dogs. To participate, have your vet contact them at 410-502-7325.
Monthly Cancer Check
Oregon State's College of Veterinary Medicine wants us all to do monthly cancer checks of our dogs. It's important to check from head to toe to tail. The check takes just 10 minutes.
Overheating
You already know how important it is to ensure your dog doesn't overheat. Here are some reminders about what to do if you run into a problem.
- Always give an overheated dog cool water, not cold or ice
- If your dog doesn't want to drink, try adding low-sodium chicken broth
- Use running water (from a hose or faucet) to wet down a dog, never submerge them
- After working, give your dog access to water, but not in large volume
Taurine-deficient Dilated Cardio Myopathy in Golden Retrievers
If you believe your dog is at risk for DCM, UC Davis is collecting samples.

SHOOTING |
|
Five Ways the Shooting Range Helps with Hunting
The Beretta Blog has an interesting article to help you have more shooting success this fall. According to the post, it comes down to ensuring your gun fits properly, having the right choke, improving how well you lead birds, choosing the right shot size and practicing patience.
If the Gun Fits...
Dick Jones, writing for the Beretta Blog, believes that the fast, instinctual nature of wingshooting requires a proper shotgun fit. And he believes a reasonable fit can be accomplished without having a custom stock.
You can read more about what he has to say here.

RETRIEVER RESULTS ON FACEBOOK |
|
If you haven't seen it already,
Retriever Results has a significant presence on Facebook.
The Retriever Results page includes links to articles on dog health, legislation, shooting and more. To see it in your news feed, just "like" the page.
The
RR Results page includes photos, callbacks and results from weekend activities gathered from all across North America. Results are reported by those at the event.
