The Super Retriever Series has three types of events: one of them, called  Retriever Trials can be offered by clubs or groups. Events generally consist of tests featuring three scenarios: field trials with most throwers visible; hunt tests that may or may include an attention-getting shot and a hunting savvy scenario. Pros and Amateurs are in separate divisions but compete on the same tests. The top three placing teams advance to the Crown Championship. 

Events have included a 585 yard mark, a 3 foot mark and a "quint" or five birds without a delay. Teams are scored based on faults such as moving outside a designated area while on-line, poor line to a mark or bind, whistles, creeping, cast/whistle refusals, excessive vocalization, unsteadiness, popping, avoidance of factors,handling on a mark etc. The dog with the lowest number of accumulated points ultimately wins.

The payouts (yes you can earn money!) for club events is:

• 40% to the Club
• 40% to Competitor teams
• 10% to the SRS Crown Championship pot
• 10% payback to the SRS.

Lee Howard (Mossy Pond Retrievers) with Princeton's True Grit owned by Mark Taube, won the 53-dog SRS Miss-Lou Pro event.	Owner-handler Mike Gibson and Spring River's Yankee Captain MH-MNH won the 27-dog SRS Miss-Lou Amateur event.
Owner-handler Lyle Steinman (Castile Creek Kennels) and Castile Creeks Two and a Half Men MH-MNH won the 35-dog SRS-RWM event.	Clark Kennington (Maximum Potential Retrievers) and GRHRCH Hilltop's Peanut Butter Crackers MH owned by William Jackson took second in the  SRS-RWM Open.

At Field Trials today, event catalogs may sport club logos on the cover. In the 70s, these logos also took the form of pins field trialers would attach to their hats. These pins, often of gold, silver or enamel, represented club membership and were given as thank you's to judges and gunning groups (who would travel to different trials to shoot).

The pins became informal collector's items with holders trading duplicate pins to others to add to their collections. Jack Unbehaun of Wisconsin has been gathering these items for a few years and has amassed an impressive collection of pins from clubs in the US and Canada. (He ultimately intends to gift the collection to the Bird Dog Foundation's Retriever Hall of Fame.)

His collection is missing a few though. He's looking for pins from Mobile, Shrewsbury, Treasure State, Chattanooga and Helena Retriever Clubs among others. If you find one of these or would like to send him your pins, you can reach Jack at junbehaun@fflax.net.
