Return to School - COVID Related Health & Safety Information

Dear Richmond Waldorf School Community,

Richmond Waldorf School takes the well-being and safety of our students, parents, staff, and visitors seriously and we are actively preparing for the return of students to school this fall. The Health and Safety procedures and protocols detailed below are based on recommendations from the CDC - Centers for Disease Control and VDH - Virginia Department of Health .

Please note that the following information is being published with the awareness that CDC and VDH Guidelines may change and may affect our planning for the Health and Safety of students, parents, staff, and visitors. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

RWS Building Interior
  • HVAC Air Filtration System - To improve efficiency and removal of higher percentages of airborne contaminants and to improve indoor air quality, all filters will be upgraded.
  • UV Lighting units - To disinfect rooms not served by the HVAC Air System, individual units of UV lighting will be placed in the rooms. These rooms include first and second grades, administration offices, and the main lobby.
  • Water Fountains - Although our water has been tested and is safe to drink, the fountains will be covered to prevent touching the handles.  
  • Hallway & Lobby furniture - removed 
  • Lobby Filtered Water machine - removed 
  • Front Office - see-through desk partition
  • Front Office - Non-contact thermometer
  • Isolation spaces - Front Office rearranged to accommodate up to 3 students
  • Gym - spaced seating for Late Arrivals (after 8:15 a.m.) will be supervised. Late arriving students will be escorted from the gym to their classrooms at 8:45 a.m. All Late Arrivals will be required to wear a mask as they are escorted in the hallways to their classroom.
  • Large Bathrooms - 2 students at a time; sink barriers installed
  • Single Bathrooms - 1 student at a time
  • Gym Bathrooms - 1 student at a time
  • Copier/Mail room - 1 person at a time
  • MS Library Computer - Employees who use this computer will have gloves and disinfectant placed next to the unit and will be required to log in the date and time of use as a means of “Contact Tracing”.
  • Cleaning - UV Disinfecting Wands for surface cleaning will be supplied to the Cleaning vendor
  • Cleaning - Products used will meet recommendations of the CDC
  • Hand sanitizer will be placed in every room
  • Use of Building: No entry, outside regular school days/times other than staff for school purposes, unless approved by Interim Director of Administration. 

RWS Building Exterior
  • Playground structures: Plastic and metal surfaces will be cleaned daily
  • Entrances marked with 6’ spacing on surfaces
  • Recess and Outdoor Classroom spaces will be identified 
  • Entrances:  
  • 8th Grade - MS Playground hallway door
  • 5th & 7th Grades - MS Breezeway door  
  • 1st - 4th Grades - Main building Breezeway door
  • Early Childhood - EC Entrance
  • Fire Drills will require face masks in hallways (except EC) and 6’ spacing.  

Required by students/parents/staff
  • Start of school COVID Health Statement signed to include:
  • At Home Daily temperature checks required by all staff, students. Staff and students recording a temperature of 100.4 degrees (CDC defines as ‘fever’) should stay home and notify the school Front Office immediately.
  • Reporting COVID symptoms / diagnosed positive COVID test to the Director of Administration.

  • Grades students, parents, staff - mask required until at desk and in hallways when social distancing may not be possible
  • EC students age three and under are not required to wear face masks. EC students, ages 4-6, are encouraged to wear a mask until they enter the classroom and when in the hallways when social distancing may not be possible
  • More frequent handwashing within classrooms/bathrooms will be encouraged
  • All staff will be provided with a Face Shield to use when necessary
  • All staff will be required to wear face masks in the hallways when social distancing is not possible and until they enter their classroom or office.

Required by visitors/vendors/tutors
  • On-site or on-line Health Check sheet completion
  • Mask/face shield required 
  • Sign-In / Out, to enable ‘Contact Tracing’
  • Hand sanitizer before allowed into space 
  • Escort to location

Classrooms in Grades & MS
  • Desks spaced 6’ apart 
  • Personal items (clothing, shoes, lunch box, etc) must not touch another student's items
  • Items nor food should be shared
  • Non-contact thermometer in MS area
  • “Gatherings” limited to 50 with social distancing 
  • Specialty teachers will come to the classrooms when required
  • Language and Music rooms seating will have 6’ spaced seating

Early Childhood Classrooms
  • Spacing 6’ assigned
  • Staggered “At the Table” time, with social distancing
  • Out-of-doors time extended for some activities
  • Bags for clothing, item storage, not to touch others, will be provided
  • More frequent handwashing will be added to daily schedule
  • Non-contact thermometer in EC area
  • Toys and other ‘touch’ items - will follow the CDC sharing & cleaning guidelines for schools and child care
  • Classes will avoid intermingling of students from different classes as much as possible

Aftercare
  • Social distance spacing and small groups separation (EC, Grades, MS)
  • Toys and other ‘touch’ items - will follow the CDC sharing & cleaning guidelines for schools and child care
  • Handwashing as the students enter the Aftercare space/s and frequently as needed
  • Out-of-doors time extended for appropriate activities

Sports and Movement
  • RWS Basketball and Soccer teams will practice and train for skills and techniques only. No equipment will be shared. Students should expect to provide their own equipment. Incidental touching is expected, but NOT intentional touching. When deemed ‘intentional’ the student may be required to leave the team.
  • Movement classes will require 10’ spacing when active participation in the lesson.

Students Not Feeling Well
Front Office
  • Isolation via space dividers for privacy, up to 3 students at a time
  • Small cot, trashcan, tissues, bottled water in each space
  • Temperature will be taken and presenting-symptoms recorded
  • Parent/s will be called to confirm pick up
  • Parents will be required to send email or call when the student cannot attend the following day, by 8:00 a.m.
  • A physician’s note may be required prior to returning to school 


COVID POSITIVE RESULT OF STAFF OR STUDENT
  • Continuing RWS protocols, a staff member, student or community immediate family member who has confirmed COVID diagnosis, must report the diagnosis to the Interim Director of Administration.
  • On-site vendors will be required to contact RWS should a confirmed COVID diagnosis be made of personnel who have been on campus 14 days prior to a RWS positive diagnosis.
  • CDC and VA Department of Health guidelines will be followed, including temporary closure of school for cleaning, for reporting, communicating to the community, cleaning and reopening.
  • Closings, not required by the Governor, will be counted toward required Make Up Days for compliance for Instructional Days.
