ʻImi Naʻauao
November 2020

The Hawaii Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (HASCD) is committed to giving back to Hawaii educators by providing and sharing online professional development opportunities and resources during this COVID-19 pandemic. We are happy to share our newsletter - 'Imi Na'auao.
Longtime teacher Terry Kaldhusdal shares what we
can learn from students when transitioning to in-
person learning.

Combining early-learning programs with experiential learning for older students has hidden benefits for all ages.
It's never too early to start building students’ comfort level to wrestle with topics like race, gender, and stereotypes.
Literacy instruction is complex, especially for younger students. Reading in small groups is a big step in the right direction.
Educators are contending with more stress than ever. School and district leaders must be ready to help.

In this short clip, kindergarten coach, Hilda Martinez, uses an interactive writing technique that helps young writers get their ideas down on paper.

It is essential for educators to develop their own sense of what is critical for learners going forward. The curriculum might dictate what has to be taught, but the art of teaching is all about how we teach in ways that inspire meaningful learning. As the world continues to change in ways that we could never have imagined, it is imperative that learners have what they need to succeed.

During this season of Thanksgiving, I have been reflecting on the things I am most grateful for and for all the things educators have done and continue to do for our students during this pandemic. I know we never could have imagined we would be ringing in the holidays this way, but I truly am thankful for our Hawaii school administrators, teachers and staff for their dedication.

As we get begin to celebrate the holidays, whatever is beautiful, whatever is meaningful, whatever brings you happiness, may it be yours this holiday season.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Sincerely yours,
President, Hawaii ASCD
