This recipe replicates the flavors of the classic sandwich, from the sauerkraut and Swiss cheese, right down to the homemade dressing, made with mayonnaise, ketchup, and pickle relish. For the best results, you should skip the canned sauerkraut and use the bagged kind sold near the hot dogs instead. Both sweet relish and dill relish work well in this recipe, so you can use whichever you prefer. We call for using the grill, but if the weather isn't cooperating, you can use a grill pan on the stove as well. You'll love the creative presentation and how simple these hot dogs are to put together no matter the time of year.
Meal Items
  • 3 tbsp reduced-calorie mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • ½ tbsp hot dog pickle relish
  • 4 light beef or pork hot dogs
  • 4 reduced-calorie hot dog buns, whole-grain variety
  • ½ cup sauerkraut, drained
  • 6 tbsp shredded low-fat Swiss cheese

  1. Preheat grill to medium-high heat.
  2. In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, and relish.
  3. Grill hot dogs directly over heat, turning as needed until grill marks appear and heated through, about 5 minutes. Grill buns until lightly toasted, about 1 minute.
  4. To serve, place a hot dog in each bun; spread each with 1 tbsp dressing and 2 Tbsp sauerkraut. Sprinkle each with 1 1/2 tbsp cheese; heat on a covered grill until cheese melts.
  5. Serving Size: 1 hot dog with all the fixings!
